DURHAM, N.H. – The Vermont men’s soccer team did something no other team had done all season on Sunday, beat New Hampshire. The results brought the second-seeded Catamounts their sixth America East men’s soccer title in program history and first since 2015.
Yves Borie’s goal in the 68th minute carried to a Catamounts to a 1-0 win over the sixth-ranked and top-seeded Wildcats in the 2021 #AEMSOC Championship game in front of 3,403 fans at UNH’s Wildcat Stadium.
Vermont, winners of its last five games, will learn its NCAA draw during the selection show on Monday, November 15 at 1 p.m. on NCAA.com. UNH will also hear its name called as an at large selection, giving America East two teams in the field for the third time in the last six years. Since 2012, nine America East teams have reached the second round, three the third round and UMBC made it all the way to the College Cup in 2014.
A physical first half resulted in just three total shots on net. Vermont struck for the game’s only goal 22 minutes into the second half. Nacho Lerech, a second-team All-Conference performer, sent a long free kick into the box. The ball found Adrian Schulze Solano who headed it over to Borie for the score on the right-legged blast.
Schulze Solano, who helped Vermont control the balance of play in the midfield, earned Most Outstanding Player honors.
UNH (16-1-2), which suffered its first loss of the season threatened with five second half shots but couldn’t find the back of the net for the first time all season.
