Bulldogs Fall in PKs in NCAA Men’s Soccer Third Round

BOSTON – No. 11 Bryant fell to Saint Louis in a 4–3 penalty-kick shootout in the third round of the NCAA men’s soccer tournament on Saturday evening in Smithfield R.I.

The Billikens opened the scoring when Quinten Blair found the back of the net off a corner kick from Jack DiMaria in the 19th minute.

The Bulldogs answered with a corner of their own, as Fermin Rodriguez finished a delivery from Paco Fernandez off a service by Delagado to tie the game at 1–1 with under three minutes remaining in the opening half.

Bryant doubled its lead when Muslim Umar received a through ball from Jorge Veintimilla on a fast break and beat Saint Louis’ A-10 Goalkeeper of the Year, Jeremi Abonnel, as he came off his line.

In the 56th minute, Bryant keeper Enzo Carvalho got tangled up with Saint Louis’ Theo Franca, and the Billikens were awarded a penalty kick, which they converted to tie the game at 2–2.

Neither side was able to find the back of the net over the final 24 minutes of regulation as they headed to overtime tied at 2–2, with Bryant leading in shots (10–8) and corners (6–3).

The Billikens fired first three minutes into overtime, but Carvalho staved off a one-on-one scoring opportunity by Franca to keep the Bulldogs alive.

The teams played two scoreless overtime periods before heading to a penalty-kick shootout.

The Billikens converted all four of their penalty kicks to advance, while the Bulldogs went three-for-five.

With the penalty-kick loss, the Bulldogs’ season comes to an end at 17-2-3.
