#AEWSOC Week 6: Binghamton, Maine Win Conference Openers

BOSTON – Conference play got underway over the weekend with Binghamton and Maine picking up wins. The Bearcats and Black Bears all earned three points while four other teams earned one point via a tie.  

All nine teams will play eight league games, facing every other conference opponent once with teams receiving three points for a win, one for a tie and zero for a loss. The top six teams in the standings at the end of the regular season will qualify for the 2025 America East Women’s Soccer Championship.

Need to Know
  • Anna Buckwalter’s goal in the 47th minute pushed Binghamton to a 2-1 win over UMBC.
  • The Bearcats extended their unbeaten streak to six games (4-0-2) and sit at No. 81 in the latest NCAA RPI rankings, the highest in the conference.
  • Binghamton wrapped up the non-conference portion of its slate with a record of 5-1-2, its best start since 2017.
  • Maine grew its unbeaten streak vs. conference opponents to 16 games dating back to 2023. The Black Bears got an early goal from Julie Lossius to beat UAlbany, 1-0,
  • NJIT extended its unbeaten streak to six games (3-0-3) with a 1-1 tie vs. UMass Lowell. Emily Jozak (NJIT) and Gaby Eckroth (UMass Lowell) were the goal scorers.
  • UMass Lowell won both of its games last week by a combined 8-1 score, downing Stonehill, 3-0, on Thursday and New Haven, 5-1, on Sunday.
  • Bryant and Vermont played to a scoreless draw. The Bulldogs have shut out four straight opponents.
  • The #AEWSOC preseason poll and All-Conference teams were announced on July 29. Binghamton and New Hampshire were tabbed the co-favorites - link.
 
Weekly Award Winners – Sept. 22

Co-Offensive Player of the Week
Anna Buckwalter, Binghamton – So., Midfielder, Birdsboro, Pa.
  • Scored the game-winning goal in Binghamton’s 2-1 win over UMBC on Sunday.
  • Found the back of the net in the 48th minute from 18 yards out.
  • This is Buckwalter’s first career #AEWSOC Offensive Player of the Week honor.
 
Co-Offensive Player of the Week
Julie Lossius, Maine – Sr., Forward, Kristiansand, Norway
  • Scored the lone goal in Maine’s 1-0 win over UAlbany on Sunday.
  • Found the back of the net in the eighth minute for what proved to be the game winner.
  • This is Lossius’ first career #AEWSOC Offensive Player of the Week honor.
 
Defensive Player of the Week
Rebecca Grisdale, Maine – Sr., Defender, Calgary, Alberta
  • Led a defensive unit that shut out UAlbany, 1-0, in the conference opener for both teams on Sunday.
  • Helped hold the Great Danes to just five total shots and two on goal.
  • This is Grisdale’s first #AEWSOC Defensive Player of the Week honor of her career.
 
Rookie of the Week
Elena Barenberg, Maine – Fr., Goalkeeper, Cologne, Germany
  • Recorded first career win and shutout in Maine’s 1-0 victory over UAlbany on Sunday.
  • Made two key, diving stops to help preserve the win.
  • This is Barenberg’s first career #AEWSOC Rookie of the Week honor.
