#AEXC Week 7: Maine Sweeps Awards After Top Finishes at New England Championships

BOSTON – Multiple teams placed within the top five at the New England Cross Country Championships over the weekend.

On the women’s side, Maine finished second overall with 82 points. Helen Shearer led the way for the Black Bears with a second-place finish. Shearer finished 2nd overall with a time of 17:28.29.  New Hampshire finished close behind with a third-place finish and 109 points. Ruth White notched a third-place time of 17:31.84 while Claire Ronan posted a seventh-place time of 17:44.01. Bryant senior Kayla Ondy also had a top 30 finish with a time of 18:27.5 in the women’s 5k.

Maine men’s cross-country team had a strong showing at New England’s as well, placing third with 112 points. Charlie Collins led the way for the Black Bears with a seventh-place finish. Collins finished with a time of 24:16.52 at a 4:53.0 pace. Amongst the top performers was Vermont’s William Locke. The junior completed the 8k route at a time of 24:37 for an 11th place finish. Zachary Hooper and John Murphy, of New Hampshire, helped lead the Wildcats to a sixth-place finish.

Multiple teams are gearing up for another weekend of competitions. UMass Lowell and Maine will be traveling to the Princeton Fall Classic while UMBC, UAlbany, and NJIT compete at the ECAC Championships in New York.

Female Performer of the Week 
Helen Shearer, Maine – Redshirt Sr., Hampden, Maine
  • Shearer was the top America East runner in the field at the New England Championship.
  • Finishing 2nd overall with a time of 17:28.29 and helped lead Maine to a second-place finish at the New England Championships.
  • Earned Shearer’s first #AEXC Performer of the Week honor this year.

Female Rookie of the Week 
Lila Garbett, Maine – Fr., Glastonbury, Conn.
  • Finished with a new PR of 18:23.25, finishing as the top America East freshman at the event.
  • This is Garbett’s first #AEXC Rookie of the Week honor.
 
Male Performer of the Week 
Charlie Collins, Maine – Jr., Hampden, Maine
  • Collins set a new PR and finished in 7th place and helped lead Maine to a third-place finish.
  • He completed the course in a time of 24:16.6.
  • This is Collin's first #AEXC Performer of the Week honor.
     
Male Rookie of the Week 
Ethan Keller, Maine – Fr., Scarborough, Maine
  • Keller set a new PR with a time of 25:12.09 and was the top finisher amongst America East freshmen.
  • This is Keller’s first Rookie of the Week honor.
