Women’s #AEHoops Week 1: Four Teams Remain Unbeaten

BOSTON –  Four teams went 2-0 last week and 8 of 9 secured at least one victory while posting a 12-5 combined record for a strong start to the season.
  
The Week That Was
  • NJIT and Bryant were the only two teams to go 2-0 against Division I competition last week. The Highlanders dispatched Sacred Heart 64-51 and then outlasted Fordham 82-78.
  • Bryant, meanwhile, used a dominant second half to blow out CCSU 71-50 and locked down on Cornell by a 64-38 margin.
  • UAlbany opened with an impressive 74-46 win over Marist and fell at Syracuse by 19 points on Friday.
  • Vermont and Binghamton both went 2-0 with wins over a pair of non-Division I programs.
  • UMBC, New Hampshire and UMass Lowell all took down non-Division I opponents and then fell to Power 4 programs. UMBC lost at No. 10 Maryland while both UNH and UML dropped contests at Boston College.
  • Maine lost by a single point to St. Joseph’s, 63-62, in their season-opener but welcomed back Adrianna Smith who had 25 points in her first contest since March of 2024.
 
Looking Ahead
  • There are 17 competitions this week, beginning with New Hampshire at Colgate and UAlbany hosting Dartmouth.
  • Maine faces No. 11 NC State on Tuesday and then plays at VCU in a pair of tough contests.
  • Vermont welcomes Buffalo while UMBC travels to UVA and NJIT heads to Minnesota this coming week.

Player of the Week
Alejandra Zuniga, NJIT – Sr., Guard, Madrid, Spain
  • Averaged 18.0 points, 7.0 assists and 5.0 rebounds in a pair of victories.
  • Opened the season with 24 points, seven assists and four rebounds in a 13-point win over Sacred Heart
  • This is Zuniga’s second career #AEHoops Player of the Week honor..
 
Rookie of the Week
Amaya Stewart, UAlbany – Fr., Forward, West Reading, Pa.
  • Averaged 12.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game in a 1-1 week for UAlbany.
  • Put up 17 points, five rebounds and four blocks in her collegiate debut, a 28-point win over Marist.
  • This is Stewart’s first #AEHoops Rookie of the Week honor.
