BOSTON – America East student-athletes once again impressed in the classroom during the 2023-24 academic year, led by the University of Vermont, which captured the Walter Harrison Academic Cup for posting the highest GPA of any athletic department in America East sponsored sports.
UVM student-athletes posted a 3.50 GPA to win their second-straight Academic Cup and the 10th overall, a conference record. Vermont narrowed edged Maine (3.48), which finished second for a second-straight year.
As a whole, America East student-athletes combined to achieve 3.40 GPA. It the second-highest cumulative GPA in conference history, trailing just the 2020-21 academic year.

- Vermont’s 3.50 GPA edged out Maine (3.48) for the second straight year
- This is Vermont’s 10th Academic Cup in school history, which is the most in league history.
- Vermont had seven different programs earn at least a 3.50 GPA, led by women’s swimming at 3.71 and women’s soccer at 3.70.
- All nine America East institutions averaged at least a 3.22 GPA in 2023-24 with eight of the nine schools equaling or exceeding their cumulative GPAs from the previous year.
- Binghamton, Maine, NJIT and Vermont had each of their America East sponsored sports earn at least a 3.0 GPA.
- Maine women’s basketball posted the highest GPA of any individual sport program with a 3.86 GPA. Binghamton cross country was the second highest at 3.78, while Maine cross country was third with a 3.76 GPA.
- Women’s soccer and women’s swimming tied for the highest GPA by any individual sport, as the two each averaged a 3.60 GPA for the 2023-24 academic year.
- It’s the 19th consecutive year America East student-athletes have averaged better than a 3.0 GPA.
