Stony Brook, N.Y. - On a day in which the Stony Brook men's soccer team met a courageous 10-year-old Ecuadorean boy, who served as their honorary captain, the #Seawolves played inspired soccer and defeated Rhode Island, 1-0, on the strength of senior Will Casey's (Setauket, N.Y.) 49th minute goal.
Stony Brook improves to 2-2-0 on the season and drops Rhode Island to 1-3-0. The Seawolves have now won seven consecutive home non-conference matches in a row, dating back to the 2011 season.
Earlier in the day at Stony Brook Hospital, members of the team had gathered to surprise Kevin Rosero, who had come to the United States this past January with a facial deformity and will head home to his native Ecuador after Stony Brook doctors performed 10 surgeries to repair his lower lip.
"We had a great opportunity to meet Kevin today and learn about his story. It put a lot into perspective for our guys. There's ups and downs, highs and lows, but to really learn what he's been through, spend some time with him and see how positive he has been throughout it...it was an awesome experience."
