Boston U. Wins Eighth-Straight Women's Tennis Title - AmericaEast.com


Boston University defeated Stony Brook University, 4-0, to earn its eighth-consecutive America East Women's Tennis Championship at Cullman Courts. The Terriers have now won each of the 12 conference championships which they have entered. University of Vermont was the America East Champion in 1993 when Boston University opted not to play in the conference tournament.

The Terriers earn America East's automatic bid to the NCAA Women's Tennis Championship and await Thursday's selections and pairings.

The championship match was moved indoors due to the weather and the format was changed with singles matches played first.

Championship Most Outstanding Performer Christina Causway got the Terriers off to a fast start with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Martha Barrett at number one singles. Lindsey Dynoff followed with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Patricia Gomez at number two singles. Elena deMendoza was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Karen Hansen at number three singles and Silvia Gugliemi sealed the team match with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Georgia Bushell at number four singles. Alana Marcu and Elisa Glas also led for the Terriers before those matches were stopped with the team match decided.

Each of the Terriers top six players, Causway, Dynoff, deMendoza, Gugliemi, Marcu and Glas, were named all-conference. They were joined by Barrett of Stony Brook, Grace Wu, Amy Weissberg and Kristin Jobe of Binghamton, Alexis Alexander of Hartford, Kim LeDonne of New Hampshire and Violeta Petijevic of Albany. Gary Glassman of Stony Brook was named the America East Coach of the Year. It is the Seawolves first year in the conference.

The America East Tennis Championship utilizes a format of three doubles matches and six singles matches. Each singles match, which use a best two-of-three sets format, is worth one point. Doubles matches are played using eight-game pro sets with a 12-point tie-break at eight games all. The team winning two or more of the doubles matches receives one point in the team scoring. A minimum of four points is required to win the team match.
