Seven-time defending champion Boston University and conference newcomer Stony Brook University advanced to the America East Women's Tennis Championship with convincing semifinal wins at the Connecticut Tennis Center in New Haven, Conn. The Terriers and Seawolves will meet Sunday at 9 a.m., weather permitting or 10:30 a.m. if the match is moved indoors.
The top-seeded Terriers posted a 7-0 win over Vermont. Christina Causway, Lindsey Dynof, Elena deMendoza, Silvia Guglielmi, Alana Marcu and Elisa Glas all had straight-set wins in singles. Causway and Dynof, deMendoza and Guglielmi and Marcu and Glas teamed for the doubles wins.
The second-seeded Seawolves shutout Binghamton University, 4-0 to advance to the championship. Patricia Gomez, Georgia Bushell and Deanna Ghozati were all straight-set winners in singles. Martha Barrett and Karen Hansen, and Gomez and Bushell had doubles victory to earn the team point. The other matches were stopped when the team match had been decided.
In other action, Binghamton took a 6-0 win over University of Vermont to earn third place. Grace Wu, Janine Sadaka, Amy Weissberg, Kristin Jobe and Amy Linda all had singles wins. Wu and Weissberg, and Jobe and Linda teamed for the doubles wins. The Catamounts finished in fourth place.
University of New Hampshire's 5-0 win over University at Albany gave the Wildcats the fifth-place finish. Lindsey Johnson, Hallie Erickson, Jenny Witter and Katie Rose were singles winners for the Wildcats. Erickson and Witter, and Rose and Amy Surprenant were the doubles winners. The Great Danes finished sixth.
The America East Tennis Championship utilizes a format of three doubles matches and six singles matches. Doubles matches are played first using eight-game pro sets with a 12-point tie-break at eight games all. The team winning two or more of the doubles matches receives one point in the team scoring. The doubles matches are followed by the singles matches using a best two-of-three sets format. Each singles match is worth one point. A minimum of four points is required to win the team match.
