BOSTON – Binghamton edged UMBC in overtime to move into a tie for first place on Saturday, while UAlbany held off UMass Lowell to match the Bearcats at 4-1 with one weekend of play remaining.
The Bearcats jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the first quarter, but UMBC fought back and tied up the contest multiple times in the fourth, including a goal with 3:36 remaining. Binghamton’s Gabriella Meli tallied the eventual game-winner with just 1:44 left and Sophia Salgado made two huge saves in the final minute to secure the victory. The Great Danes improve to 4-1 by holding UMass Lowell to its lowest point total of the season, winning 10-7 to keep up their chances of earning a second straight regular season title.
Bryant kept its playoff hopes alive with a 16-15 victory over New Hampshire, while Vermont ended the weekend for the league with an impressive 11-10 home victory against Rutgers on senior day.
With just one week left in the regular season, Binghamton and UAlbany are both 4-1. The Bearcats host Bryant at 1 p.m. on Saturday while UAlbany travels to UNH. Should both teams win they would share the regular season title, but the Great Danes would host the tournament due to their head-to-head victory. UMBC’s regular season is done at 4-2, but could earn a share of the regular season title if both teams lose.
Elsewhere UMass Lowell (2-3) and Bryant (3-2) battle for the final playoff spot. The River Hawks host Vermont and would be in with a win and Bryant loss, while the Bulldogs would clinch a tournament berth with a win, or a loss and a UMass Lowell loss.
The preseason poll was announced on January 17.
