The Weekend Preview: Sept. 15-17

AMERICA EAST COMPOSITE SCHEDULE

BOSTON –
Conference play begins this weekend for women’s soccer and field hockey, highlighting a busy weekend of action across the America East.
 

Women’s Soccer
Sunday
UAlbany at NJIT – 1 PM
Bryant at UMBC – 1 PM
Binghamton at UNH – 2 PM
UVM at Maine – 3 PM
 
Eight schools begin their quest for an #AEWSOC regular season title on Sunday, starting with a pair of contests at 1 PM. Entering conference play, Maine has been the hottest team in the league, boasting a 5-0-3 record. The Black Bears are led by Abby Kraemer, who ranks 13th nationally in goals with seven in eight games. After going just 4-9-3 and winless in #AEWSOC play last season, Vermont is 5-2 this year thanks to Kate Bossert’s six goals.
 
Defending conference champion New Hampshire is at .500 with its record of 3-3-1, while Binghamton is 1-4-3. The two teams faced off in an epic title game last year, as Binghamton came back from a 4-1 halftime deficit to force OT and eventually PK’s. UNH won the shootout 3-2 to claim the conference title. Bryant is 3-2-1 this season, anchored by Kathryn McNeil, who ranks seventh in the nation with a .941 save percentage. while NJIT is 3-2-4 and had a five-game unbeaten streak earlier this season.

Friday

Four of the conference’s nine programs begin #AEFH action this weekend, with games on Friday and Sunday. Stanford has won two of its last three contests, but takes on a UNH squad (3-2) this Friday which has scored three or more goals in four of its five games this year. Tasmin Cookman leads the offense with six goals and 13 points. Maine is 2-4 this season, with three of its four losses coming to teams which are currently nationally ranked. Mallory Mackesy is tied for the league lead with six goals. UC Davis is 1-6 this season, though Sarah Lopez has been solid in net, leading the league in saves (62) and ranking third in save percentage (.713).
 
In other field hockey action this weekend, Vermont travels to face No. 1 Iowa on Friday at 4 PM while Bryant plays No. 16 Wake Forest on Sunday. No. 20 UAlbany plays at Towson and Drexel on Saturday and Sunday, with UMass Lowell facing off against No. 18 UMass on Sunday afternoon.
 

Men’s Soccer
Four #AEMSOC program have one or zero losses this year, led by Bryant who is a perfect 5-0 and is one of two teams in the nation which has yet to concede a goal this season. The Bulldogs, who are receiving votes in the latest national poll, look to keep up the strong play when they play at Brown on Saturday on ESPN+.
 
No. 12 Vermont has won three straight and travels to face Harvard on Saturday, while No. 21 New Hampshire is back in the national rankings and battles with Princeton at home on Friday night at 6 PM on ESPN+. UMBC hosts No. 25 Cornell as it looks to improve on its 3-1-1 record. NJIT is at home against Sacred Heart on Saturday, while UAlbany and UMass Lowell are on the road.
 

Volleyball
All six teams are in action this weekend, combining to play 16 matches from Friday to Sunday. Reigning champion UMBC (5-3) travels to face No. 13 Penn State on Friday night and then squares off with Seton Hall on Sunday. New Hampshire (7-3), meanwhile, plays at No. 20 Kansas at 8 PM, along with Texas State.
 
Binghamton is 6-4 and squares off against Brown and UConn on Saturday, with a match against Michigan State on Sunday. Bryant looks to improve on its 7-4 record when the team plays Columbia, St. John’s and No. 16 Arkansas this weekend. NJIT is 5-5 and looks to upend Delaware State, Georgetown and Penn this weekend. UAlbany battles with MTSU, George Mason and Seattle as well.
 

Cross Country
Four cross country programs are in action this weekend. Binghamton races in the Iona Meet of Champions on Friday morning, while UMass Lowell competes at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday. Maine travels out to Indiana for the John McNichols Invitational and NJIT is at the Jasper Fall Invitational.
