Winners Let Up No Runs on #AESB Day 2

BALTIMORE, Md. – In a day dominated by the pitching, UMBC and UAlbany remain unbeaten while Maine sneaks past UMass Lowell to advance onto Day 3.

The top-seeded Retreivers, led by both the #AESB Pitcher and Coach of the Year, came out swinging to take down fourth-seeded UMass Lowell 7-0, while third-seeded UAlbany upended second-seeded Binghamton 6-0 in a lights out performance by Wendi Hammond. The sixth-seeded Black Bears stunned fourth-seeded UMass Lowell after pitcher Caitlyn Fallon lets up no runs in their 1-0 win.
 
Day 3 of the tournament opens with top-seeded UMBC taking on third-seeded UAlbany at 11:00 a.m. for the winners bracket matchup followed by second-seeded Binghamton and sixth-seeded Maine at 1:30 p.m. The Game 1 loser will take on Game 2 winner at 4 p.m. to determine who moves onto the #AESB finale.

  • UMBC jumped on UMass Lowell with two runs in the first inning, highlighted by a fielder's choice from Courtney Coppersmith which allowed a run to score.
  • The Retrievers extended their lead to 3-0 on a homer by Madison Wilson in the third. They pushed it to 6-0 with an RBI single and a pair of bases-loaded walks in the fourth.
  • Courtney Coppersmith didn't need any help as she gave up just three hits and allowed just one runner to reach third base as she struck out eight in seven shutout innings.
  • Wilson finished with two hits and three RBI in the contest while Ashley Della Guardia was 2-for-3 with two runs.
  • Giana LaCedra took the loss for UMass Lowell as she gave up two earned runs in 3.0 innings of work with one strikeout.
  • Coppersmith has now pitched 29.1 straight scoreless innings in #AESB Championship play. Overall in #AESB championship action she is 11-0 with a 0.29 ERA and 105 strikeouts in 73 IP.
No. 3 UAlbany 6, No. 2 Binghamton 0
  • It was a pitcher's duel through the first four innings Brianna Roberts and Wendi Hammond allowed just two hits apiece to keep it 0-0.
  • UAlbany's best chance to score came in the third as they put a runner on second with two outs, however, Jill Fittry made a leaping catch at the wall to prevent any runnings crossing the plate.
  • Chloe Lewis broke open the game with a solo shot in the fifth, followed by a Jordan Nastos homer and RBI to bring the score up to 3-0.
  • Nastos continued to have the hot bat, doubling in the 7th to bat in two more runners before running one in herself giving UAlbany a 6-0 lead.
  • Hammod pitched her first compete game of the Championship, allowing no runs and only two hits in her six strikeout performance.
No. 6 Maine 1, No. 4 UMass Lowell 0
  • It was another pitcher's duel through the first three innings, but Maine broke through in the fourth. Jamine Gray reached on an error to start the frame and came around to score on a single by Krista Francia 
  • Caitlyn Fallon only allowed one hit apiece in the sixth and seventh innings, but the runners never got past first. She finished off the contest with an emphatic strikeout to give the Black Bears the win.
