UAlbany, Maine, and UMass Lowell Move On After #AESB Day 1

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Great Danes, Black Bears, and River Hawks all live to see another day of the 2023 America East Softball Championship as UAlbany, Maine, and UMass Lowell all posted victories Wednesday at the UMBC Softball Stadium.

The fourth-seeded River Hawks never trailed as they took down fifth-seeded Bryant 11-3 in the first game of the day while the second contest saw third-seeded UAlbany put together a complete team effort with seven different players scoring in their 7-3 win over sixth-seeded Maine. The Black Bears bounced back in dominant fashion for Game 3, taking down the Bulldogs 11-1.
 
Day 2 of the tournament begins with top-seeded UMBC hosting fourth-seeded UMass Lowell at 11:00 a.m. followed by second-seeded Binghamton and third-seeded UAlbany at 1:30 p.m. Sixth-seeded Maine will take on the lowest-seeding losing team among the teams competing earlier in the day, at 4:00 pm.

UMass Lowell 11, Bryant 3
  • The River Hawks strung together five-straight hits in the second to grab an early 4-0 lead. Brenna Davenport delivered a two-run single and two batters later Tori Mueller crushed a triple to left which drove in two. 
  • Bryant bounced right back in the third and cut the deficit to one on Megan Marcel's towering three-run home run to left. 
  • UMass Lowell responded with five runs, highlighted by Ellie Frederick's 2 RBI homer to close out the third, giving the River Hawks a 9-3 lead.
  • It was another Frederick homer in the fifth to close out the game 11-3.
  • Frederick and Davenport lead the Riverhawks each finishing the game with three runs and four RBI.

UAlbany 7, Maine 3
  • The #AESB Player of the Year, Morgan Petter, opened up scoring with her RBI single in the first.
  • UAlbany broke open the game in the second, with four players scoring to give the Great Danes a 5-0 lead.
  • Caitlyn Mitros added to the Great Danes' advantage in the fourth, driving in a run and coming around to score later in the frame.
  • The Black Bears began gaining momentum in the final innings, scoring three runs split between the sixth and seventh, but couldn't overcome the defecit.
  • Seven Great Danes scored in their win with six of the scorers also tallying an RBI. Jordan Nastos led the team with two.
Maine 11, Bryant 1
  • Maine scored in the top of the first and Bryant threatened to break it open in the bottom of the frame with the bases loaded and zero outs. However, the Black Bears limited the damage to one run to leave the first tied 1-1.
  • Three proved to be the lucky number for the Black Bears, as they retook the lead with three runs in the third, including Katie Moery's first of three runs of the game.
  • Maine continued to have the hot bat tallying seven more runs between the fifth and sixth innings bringing the score up to 11-1.
  • Jasmine Gray had herself a day, recording two runs herself and three RBI, while Alysen Rieth pitched a complete game for the Black Bears allowing only one run and recording three strike outs.
