2022 #AEWLAX Annual Awards Revealed

BOSTON – The sixth-ranked Stony Brook Seawolves garnered nearly all America East women’s lacrosse major awards, which were announced Wednesday morning.
 
Tewaaraton finalist Ellie Masera was named Midfielder of the Year to highlight the group. UMBC’s Kolby Weedon earned Rookie of the Year honors while Joe Spallina was deemed Coach of the Year.
 
The award winners were determined in a vote by the league's head coaches who were not permitted to vote for their own players.

2022 #AEWLAX Major Award Winners
Attacker of the Year
Kailyn Hart, Jr., Stony Brook
  • Led the league in goals during conference play, averaging 4.5 per contest.
  • Hart also scored the second-most points, helping Stony Brook lead the league with 17.3 goals per game during conference play.
  • Fourth Seawolf to earn the award – all of whom have come in the past six years.
  • Also a First-Team All-Conference selection.
 
Midfielder of the Year
Ellie Masera, So., Stony Brook
  • 58 goals on the season rank among the top-20 in Division I.
  • Ranks in the top-three in goals, points and draw controls among league leaders.
  • Second Stony Brook midfielder to earn the honor, following three-time winner and All-American Ally Kennedy.
  • First-Team All-Conference selection.
 
Defender of the Year
Haley Dillon, Gr., Stony Brook
  • Anchors the best defense in the country which allowed less than seven goals per game.
  • Dillon’s 4.6 caused turnovers per game rank fourth in the country.
  • Helped the Seawolves hold America East opponents to just 4.5 goals per game.
  • In the seven-year history of the award, a Stony Brook student-athlete has been honored every year.
 
Goalkeeper of the Year
Charlie Campbell, Gr., Stony Brook
  • Her .558 save percentage in conference games is the best in #AEWLAX.
  • Ranks second with a 4.5 goals against average.
  • Finished the season with a 6-1 record.
  • Second Goalkeeper of the Year from Stony Brook, joining three-time winner Anna Tesoriero.
 
Rookie of the Year
Kolby Weedon, Fr., UMBC
  • Ranks in the league’s top-10 in goals and points.
  • Her 2.6 goals per game are tied for sixth-best in #AEWLAX.
  • Weedon earned a spot on the All-Conference Second Team.
  • Second Retriever to receive the honor and first since Jamie Fahey in 2010.
 
Coach of the Year
Joe Spallina, Stony Brook
  • Guided Stony Brook to a ninth consecutive #AEWLAX regular-season title.
  • The Seawolves have won 60 consecutive games against conference opponents.
  • Spallina is now a six-time Coach of the Year.
  • He is joined on staff by Greg Miceli and Sydney Pirreca.
 

The Seawolves were also the most well-represented on the All-Conference teams with nine first- or second-team honorees. UAlbany, which earned the top seed in the championship, was next with seven.

The All-Rookie Team was headlined by two All-Conference selections.

11 All-Academic honorees excelled in the classroom and on the turf and combine to hold an astounding 3.88 grade-point average.

The Great Danes will host the championship for the first time since 2011 and kick off the tournament by greeting the Retrievers in semifinals on Thursday at 3 p.m. Vermont and Binghamton battle in the other semifinal at 6 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
 
The semifinal winners will go head-to-head for the 2022 conference championship on Saturday, May 7, at 2 p.m.
