Softball 3/1/2022 10:49:39 AM Badger, Matter Shine, Earn #AESB Week #2 Awards BOSTON – Three #AESB teams took the field last week and two of them put up strong showings. Stony Brook kicked off its season by going 4-1 in Miami. The Seawolves were powered by Player of the Week Corinne Badger, who whacked six home runs in the five games. Two-time reigning champion UMBC also put on a strong showing going 3-1. Freshman hurler Kya Matter was the star for the Retrievers, hurling a no-hitter in just her second career start, a 1-0 win over Coppin State. She also set a program record with 18 strikeouts in the game, which is the most by any pitcher in the country so far this season. Four programs are in action this weekend including Stony Brook, which makes its 2022 debut. Racked up an impressive 2.571 OPS hitting .500 with a 2.000 slugging percentage in five games last week. All six of her hits were home runs. Drove in 11 runs and scored six. This is Badger’s first career Player of the Week honor. Pitcher & Rookie of the Week Kya Matter, UMBC – Fr., Pitcher, Dalmatia, Pa. Went 2-0 while allowing only two earned runs in 14 innings pitched. Struck out 31. Highlight of the week was one of the best pitching performances by anyone this season to date as she hurled a no-hitter with 18 Ks and only one walk in a 1-0 win over Coppin State on Saturday.
