The Champs are Here! UNH (W), UMBC (M) Break Away for #AESD Titles

WORCESTER, Mass. – New Hampshire and UMBC jumped in the pool as champions of America East swimming and diving on Sunday night after a thrilling four-day meet.
 
The Wildcats won their third consecutive title and 10th overall – the most in conference history. They are just the third program to three-peat in #AESD history.
 

 
The Retrievers increased their record number of championships to 13. They have won all but two titles in the last 15 years men’s swimming and diving has been sponsored by the conference.

Caroline Sargent toppled a meet record Sunday in a closely contested. The UMBC senior beat reigning 200 backstroke champion and event record holder Anna Metzler in 1:56.14. Sargent was named Most Outstanding Swimmer of the meet.
 

 
Daniel Nicusan set a new meet record in the 200 breaststroke, swimming in 1:57.56 in a pivotal race for UMBC.
 

 
UMBC junior Niklas Weigelt swam the second-fastest 100 freestyle time in conference championship history on Sunday and was named Most Outstanding Swimmer of the meet.
 
A pair of Retrievers were named Most Outstanding Rookies. Oliver Gassmann earned the honor on the same day on which the freshman won the 200 butterfly. Loujy Abdellatif, who earned a bronze medal in the 100-yard butterfly Saturday, also received the honor.
 
Maine’s PhilAnn Dixon capped a historic week with Most Outstanding Diver honors. Dixon became the first Black Bear to win either women’s diving events.
 
Binghamton senior Chris Egan was named Most Outstanding Diver for the second time in three seasons and is the third consecutive Bearcat to receive the honor.
 
New Hampshire senior Anna Metzler earned the Dave Alexander Coaches’ Award for compiling the most points in the championship meet over her four-year career. Luka Zuric earned the honor for his championship achievements as a Retriever.
 
Cate Wardinski received the conference’s Elite 18 award after medaling in several events. The New Hampshire senior holds a 3.97 in Marine, Estuarine and Fresh Water Biology Sustainability.
 
Binghamton junior Ryan Maierle earned the honor with a perfect 4.0 GPA in Business Administration and Finance.
 
The championship-winning coaching staffs were named Coaching Staffs of the meet. It is the 15th time Josh Willman and his staff have been honored for UNH. In his first season with UMBC, Matt Donovan and his staff received the award following a championship season.
