UNH (W), UMBC (M) Snag Leads on Second Day of #AESD Championships

WORCESTER, Mass. – Halfway through the 2022 #AESD Championships, the New Hampshire Wildcats and UMBC Retrievers hold leads in the women's and men's standings, respectively.

PhilAnn Dixon completed the sweep of the women’s diving events with her 281.10 total score in the three-meter – the highest total in the event since a scoring change in 2012. She is the first Maine student-athlete to win either diving event.

   
More history was made when Kira Parker became the Vermont swimmer to win the 50 freestyle, edging out New Hampshire’s Cate Wardinski by two-tenths of a second.
 
 
In the final event of the evening, UMBC stretched its record domination in the men’s 200 freestyle to a sixth consecutive gold medal.
 
 
More Day 2 Highlights
  • Niklas Weigelt repeated as the 50 free champion, clocking in at 20.23 as the Retrievers took the top-two spots on the podium.
  • UNH junior Jamy Lum defended her title in the women’s 500-yard freestyle, besting last year’s time by cracking four minutes and 52 seconds.
  • Binghamton sophomore Liam Murphy also won a second-consecutive gold medal in the 500 free, clocking in at 4:28.20.
  • Anna Metzler became the fifth consecutive Wildcat to win the 200 IM and the first to go sub-two minutes since All-American Emily Escobedo in 2017.
  • UMBC sophomore Daniel Nicusan topped last year’s winner in the men's 200 IM, touching the wall in 1:47.41 after the four strokes.
  • The Catamounts won the women’s 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:33.64, just five one-hundredths faster than UNH’s squad.
