AE Weekend Preview: Oct. 21-23

BOSTON – Less than ten days remain in the women’s soccer and field hockey regular seasons, while the men’s soccer playoff picture should be clearer after this weekend and volleyball is in the heart of conference play.

Women’s Soccer
The regular season ends on Thursday and seven teams still have two games remaining. The standings are congested at the top as four teams have 13 points apiece, including three with matching 4-1-1 records. The biggest match of the weekend will be UMass Lowell traveling to Binghamton as both have 4-1-1 records and a win for either will keep them in running for the top seed. New Hampshire (4-1-1) travels to UMBC (1-3-2), while Maine plays its final conference game, going to Bryant (0-3-3).

Field Hockey
Just two weekends remain in the regular season and only one team has clinched a championship berth, though up to three more could get in this weekend. Vermont (4-2) looks to hand Maine (5-0) its first league loss of the year, while a victory for the Black Bears would clinch the top seed in the conference tournament and hosting duties in all three rounds, from Nov. 3-6. UAlbany (4-2) seeks to punch its ticket to the championship when it squares off against New Hampshire (2-3). On Saturday, UMass Lowell (4-2) can also clinch a championship berth with a victory over UMass Lowell.

Men’s Soccer
No. 10 Vermont (4-0) owns the longest win streak in the nation at 11 games and also has recorded seven straight shutouts, which also is the best mark in the country. The Catamounts put that all on the line when they travel to face the league’s best offense in UMBC (2-2), who could clinch a playoff spot with a victory. New Hampshire hosts an upset minded Binghamton (1-1-2) squad, while UAlbany look to clinch a berth in the championship field with a victory at NJIT (0-2-2). Bryant (0-4) and UMass Lowell (0-3-1) also square off, with each looking for its first conference victory of the season.

Volleyball
There is just one unbeaten left in conference play, and UMBC (4-0) looks to extend its six-match win streak when the team travels to UNH (2-3) on Sunday, which nearly beat Binghamton last weekend. The Bearcats are 4-1 and play at UAlbany (1-3) this weekend as they seek to fortify their playoff positioning. Bryant (2-2) has the biggest matchups, as a pair of victories this weekend against NJIT (0-4) on Friday and UAlbany on Sunday could put them firmly in third place.
