TOKYO - Three outstanding athletes will represent America East in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and Tokyo Paralympic Games. Seven Olympians with ties to the conference have qualified for the last two Summer Olympic Games.
Stony Brook women’s basketball forward India Pagan will be the first to compete as she and Puerto Rico take on China July 27th in Group C play. The multi-time All-America East choice is part of an historic Puerto Rican team which became the first from the country to qualify for the Olympics.
Continuing an incredible professional running career which has featured American records, Elle Purrier St. Pierre blazed ahead of the pack in the qualifying race for the women’s 1,500-meter to punch her ticket to Tokyo. She will represent Team USA on August 2nd in the semifinals of the event. The women’s 1,500m finals are scheduled for August 6th. Purrier St. Pierre follows Stony Brook great Lucy Van Dalen, who ran in the event for New Zealand in both the London and Rio games. Both women won collegiate national championships.
Next month, Noelle Lambert will sprint for Team USA in the Paralympic Games. The former UMass Lowell women’s lacrosse player turned Paralympian set an American record in the 100m dash the last time she appeared in international competition. Lambert will run in her first Paralympics on September 4th.
