UMBC Volleyball To Face Pitt in NCAA First Round

BOSTON – After capturing the program’s fifth title in the past six seasons, UMBC will face No. 4 overall seed Pittsburgh in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, as announced by the NCAA on Sunday evening.
 
The Retrievers will face the Panthers on Friday, Dec. 5 at 6:30 p.m. Pittsburgh is the No. 1 Seed in its region and will host a four-team pod which also features No. 8 Xavier and Michigan at 4 p.m. on Dec. 5.
 
UMBC opened the season just 1-8 with one of the toughest non-conference schedule in the league, but went 10-2 over its final 12 games to finish with a 13-11 overall mark. The Retrievers have only been swept in three matches this season. 
 
Pitt is 26-4 this year and a perfect 12-0 at home. The Panthers won the ACC Tournament on Saturday and went 4-0 in the Tournament, winning each match by a 3-0 score. This marks the third straight season the two teams have met. Pitt won each of the previous two meetings by a 3-0 margin.
