Stony Brook Captures Seventh-Straight #AEWLAX Title
STONY BROOK, N.Y. – For the seventh consecutive year, Stony Brook has claimed the America East women’s lacrosse crown. With their 21-7 victory over UAlbany in the championship game, the top-seeded Seawolves clinched the conference’s automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA tournament. They also set a new #AEWLAX conference record with the most consecutive championship wins.
The championship is Stony Brook’s seventh in program history as it also won titles from 2013-2019. The Seawolves will head to College Park, MD to play reigning national champion James Madison in the first round of the NCAA tournament Friday, May 10 at 4pm. NCAA Bracket
2019 Rookie of the Year, Hailey Carroll was the first to score in the game giving UAlbany a 1-0 lead. Stony Brook’s junior Taryn Ohlmiller led the Seawolves with four goals on four shots in the first half while 2019 Midfielder of the Year also scored three goals.
The Seawolves then scored four-straight goals by four different players. UAlbany’s Kyla Kapolski led the Great Danes with two goals in the first half. Stony Brook put together a string of five unanswered to take a 14-5 lead into the break.
The Seawolves’ scoring did not slow down in the next frame as they accounted for five of the first seven goals to start the second half. Ally Kennedy scored two times in that span and finished with a game-high six goals on the day.
The Tewaaraton nominee recorded seven points on 6 goals and 1 assist in the championship game. Kennedy was named the championship’s Most Outstanding Player.
She was joined on the All-Championship Team by teammates Sabrina Tabasso, Rayna Sabella, and Rachel Williams.
Also named to the All-Championship team were UAlbany’s Madison Conway, Sam Tortora, and Imani Hedgeman, New Hampshire’s Elise Chandler and Devan Miller and UMBC’s Jenna Baverman and Grayson Corbett.
UAlbany’s Jordyn Marr was honored with the Elite 18 award, which is given to the student-athlete with the highest GPA competing in the championship game. The junior holds a 3.97 GPA as a business administration/sociology.
