Earle, Griswold Lead Cal to Upset of Stanford, Earn #AEFH Honors

BOSTON - The first conference contest of the season took place Friday and it was a showstopper as Cal upset #6 Stanford, 2-1 in overtime, in the league's first-ever West Division game. The win was the Bears' first in eight games over the Cardinal and their second win over a ranked foe in their last three games.

Here are the week four award winners:

Player of the Week
Sydney Earle, Cal - Jr., Midfielder, San Diego, Calif.

  • Tallied the game-winning goal in Cal's 2-1 overtime win over #6 Stanford on Friday.
  • Scored off a feed from Paula Seibt in the 81st minute.
  • This is her second Player of the Week honor of the season.

Defensive Player of the Week
Kori Griswold, Cal - So., Goalkeeper, San Diego, Calif.

  • Made seven saves and allowed just one goal in Cal's 2-1 win over #6 Stanford on Friday.
  • Five of her stops came in the second half or overtime.

Rookie of the Week
Samantha Wagg, Maine - Fr., Defender, Victoria, Australia

  • Tallied six points last week in a 2-1 week for the Black Bears.
  • Scored three goals, one in a 4-1 win over Quinnipiac on Thursday and two in a 7-1 win over Siena on Saturday.
  • This is her second-straight Rookie of the Week honor.

Notes

  • Cal knocked off #6 Stanford, 2-1 in overtime, in the first conference game of the year on Friday. 
  • The win was the Bears' first in eight games over the Cardinal and their second win over a ranked foe in their last three games.
  • America East teams are a combined 39-30 in non-conference action this season.
  • America East and the ACC are the only leagues with multiple teams ranked in the nation's top six (#5 Albany, #6 Stanford).
  • Albany stayed undefeated with a 3-1 win over Bucknell Sunday.
  • Maine went 2-1 on the week and ranks ninth nationally averaging 3.6 goals per game.
  • UC Davis beat Michigan State over the weekend, the school's first win over a Power Five opponent since the program was resurrected in 2009 with its result at Michigan State
  • Vermont beat Siena, 3-0, Saturday, its second win of the season.
