Newton and Testa Collect Week Three Field Hockey Awards

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- University of Maine junior forward Kelly Newton (Vancouver, British Columbia/Crofton House School) had a strong offensive week to earn America East field hockey Player of the Week honors, while it was defense which earned Fairfield University midfielder Shealyn Testa (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton) the Rookie of the Week nod for the week ending September 12.

Newton tallied a 10-point week as the Black Bears participated in the Sheraton Catamount Classic and came out of it with two wins. In a 2-1 win over Harvard on Saturday, the junior forward finished with a goal and an assist. Newton saved her best effort for Sunday's contest against Pacific though. In the 7-2 win, she recorded her third career hat trick while also adding an assist for a seven-point game.

In the two games, Newton unleashed 15 shots after entering the week with two all season. She ranks second in America East with 13 points on five goals and three assists.

Testa helped the Stags to three wins last week, extending the team's winning streak to four. The rookie handed out an assist in a 4-1 win over Sacred Heart and registered four shots against Siena. Testa, a midfielder, was also key to the Stags' strong week defensively, holding opponents to a combined eight shots and two goals.

#18 Albany (3-1 overall, 0-0 America East) fell to #4 UConn in the Great Danes' only game of the week... Albany managed eight shots in the game... Suzy Clephane (Auckland, New Zealand/Bethlehem), Corrine McConville (Lehighton, Pa./Lehighton) and Daphne Voormolen (Rotterdam, Netherlands) led the Great Danes with two shots each... Christina Patrick (Reading, Pa./Reading Catholic) and Tessa Knapp (Marathon, N.Y./Marathon Central) also each recorded a shot... Goalkeeper Christine Hoffman (Mertztown, Pa./Brandywine Heights) played all 70 minutes in the cage for Albany, finishing with four saves... Albany will return to action over the weekend, playing a neutral-site game against Quinnipiac on Friday before taking on Michigan on Saturday.

#15 Boston University (5-1, 0-0 AE) used a 2-0 victory at #7 Boston College on Friday to move to 5-0 on the year and set the program record for most wins to start a season... Despite holding a 23-4 advantage in shots, the Terriers suffered their first loss on Sunday in a 1-0 decision at home against Northeastern... Junior Andrea Greene (Santiago, Chile/Universidad Diego Portales) scored both goals in the triumph over the Eagles to raise her team-high goal total to six... Senior Amanda Smith (Avon, Conn./Avon) made four standout saves against BC to earn the shutout in goal and lift the Terriers past their crosstown rival for the first time since 2005... Sophomore Jacinda McLeod (Whangarei, New Zealand/Whangarei Girls) assisted on Greene's second tally... The result marked the Terriers' first road victory over the Eagles since 1996 and it was the highest-ranked opponent Boston U. has defeated since a 2-0 triumph over then-#6 Connecticut in 2008... The Stags (4-3, 0-0 AE) had a solid week going undefeated, and improving to over .500. They beat Lehigh (2-1), Sacred Heart (4-1), and Siena (1-0)... They are on a four game win streak heading into the weekend when they play at Hofstra... The Stags defense has been playing especially well with holding all three opponents to a combined eight shots, and only two goals on the week... Marit Westenberg (The Hague, Netherlands/Maeriant Lyceum), Amanda Sullivan (Somers, N.Y./Somers), and Anne Nieuwenhuis (Leidschendam, Netherlands) all finished the week with two goals apiece.

Maine (4-2, 0-0 AE) participated in the Sheraton Catamount Classic at the University of Vermont over the weekend... Maine defeated Harvard 2-1 on Saturday before beating Pacific, 7-2, on Sunday... The Black Bears notched seven total goals in their game against Pacific... It was the most goals scored by Maine since last year's game against Pacific which Maine also won 7-2... Kelly Newton (Vancouver, British Columbia) picked up her third career hat trick in the game against Pacific. Newton also notched a hat trick in last season's game against Pacific. Newton has seven goals and four assists in her last two games against Pacific... Maine returns home to the Maine Field Hockey Complex where it will host Bryant University on Friday before traveling to Yale on Sept. 19.

New Hampshire (4-2, 0-0) saw its four-game winning streak end with a pair of losses to nationally-ranked teams at the Terrapin Invitational last weekend… The Wildcats were defeated 7-0 by second-ranked Maryland and 5-2 by 20th-ranked American… UNH recorded the advantage in both shots (10-9) and penalty corners (8-4) in the loss to American… Junior goalkeeper Katherine Nagengast (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) made a season-high nine saves – one less than her career high – against the second-ranked Terrapins… Juniors Whitney Frates (Woodstock, Vt./Kimball Union Academy) and Hayley Rausch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) both scored their second goal of the season vs. the Eagles… Freshman Tori Welch (East Hampstead, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) recorded her first career assist in that game… In the home/away splits, UNH is averaging 15.8 shots per game and 2.8 goals per game at home in comparison to 8.0 shots and 1.0 goals per game away from Memorial Field… UNH looks to extend its home winning streak to seven games Sept. 15 against Harvard and get its first road win of the 2010 season Sept. 18 at Holy Cross.

Vermont (3-3, 0-0 AE) went 2-0 last week, as it hosted the Sheraton Catamount Classic... UVM and Maine each went 2-0 during the tournament, but the Black Bears were named champs due to goal differential... Both of the Cats' victories came in double overtime, as they improved to .500 on the season... On Saturday sophomore Taylor Silvestro (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) scored both goals, including the gamewinner 4:41 into the second overtime, to lift the Cats to a 2-1 win over Pacific ... Vermont is now 5-1 in its last six home openers ... On Sunday Senior Brittanie Booker (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant) scored 3:56 into double overtime and junior Brooke Crane (Lancaster, N.H./White Mountain) recorded her first career shutout to give Vermont a 1-0 victory over Harvard in the final game of the Sheraton Catamount Classic... Booker, Crane and Silvestro were joined on the all-tournament team by senior Julie Moy (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) for Vermont... The Cats had only played back-to-back overtime games four times in the history of the program before this weekend… This was also the first time in school history that Vermont has played back-to-back multiple overtime contests… Booker came into this season with one career goal… UVM is now 8-2 all-time in the Sheraton Catamount Classic...
