CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--Six America East student-athletes were named to the 2009 Academic All-District Softball and Baseball Teams on Thursday presented by ESPN The Magazine and selected by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Headlining the group were softball standouts Alyssa Struzenberg from Stony Brook and Amanda Sais from Hartford, both named to the District I University Division First Team. Struzenberg, a pitcher for the top-seeded Seawolves at this week's America East Championship, is a junior with a 3.88 GPA in Business/Economics. Sais, who was recognized on the All-District Second Team a year ago, is a senior outfielder graduating with a 3.88 GPA in Psychology. Both student-athletes were named to the America East All-Conference Teams earlier this week, and both are now eligible for the Academic All-America Teams to be announced late in May.
Albany senior infielder Meagan Butsch, recently named America East Softball co-Player of the Year, Albany junior outfielder Nicole Kothe and Stony Brook senior infielder Marissa Fleury were named to the All-District I Second Team. All three are first time honorees. Butsch is a Biology major with a 3.35 GPA, Kothe is a Psychology major with a 3.68 GPA and Fleury has a 3.40 GPA in Athletic training.
Stony Brook baseball's Michael Stephan appears on the All-District I Second Team for the second consecutive year. The junior designated hitter is a history major with a 3.50 GPA.
To be nominated, the student-athlete must be a
starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point
average (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her career. No athlete is eligible until
he/she has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current
institution (thus, true freshmen, red-shirt freshmen and ineligible transfers
are not eligible). In the cases of transfers, graduate students and junior
college graduates, the athlete must have completed one full academic year at
the nominating institution to be eligible.
CoSIDA selects Academic All-America teams in 12 programs: football, women's
volleyball, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's basketball, women's basketball,
baseball, softball, men's track & field/cross country, women's track &
field/cross country, men's at-large and women's at-large. A first team, second
team and third team are selected in both the University (Division I and I-AA)
and College (Division II, III and NAIA) Divisions. Football consists of just
first and second teams.
