CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The 2008 America East Women's Soccer Championship begins on Thursday with a pair of quarterfinal contests.
Third-seeded
New Hampshire (6-10-1 Overall, 5-3-0 America East) will host No. 6 seed Binghamton (7-8-1,
3-5-0) on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in Durham.
Fourth-seeded Hartford (8-5-4, 4-3-1) hosts No. 5 seed Maine (6-5-6,
3-3-2) at 6 p.m. in a rematch of last season's quarterfinal matchup at 6 p.m. at Al-Marzook Field.
Semifinal action
with take place on Sunday, November 2 with the winner of New Hampshire
and Binghamton traveling to No. 2 seed Stony Brook (10-7-0, 6-2-0) for
a 6 p.m. contest. The winner of Hartford and Maine will go to No. 1
seed Boston University (13-5-1, 8-0-0) for a 1 p.m. start.
The
championship game will be played on Saturday, Nov. 8 or Sunday, Nov. 9
at the highest remaining seed.
Binghamton, which needed a victory over Vermont (4-13-1 Overall, 2-5-1 America East) on Sunday to qualify for the tournament for the fifth straight year, got what it needed as Dani Raske put home a rebound from six yards out 39 seconds into overtime for a 1-0 Bearcat victory at Centennial Field. With the win, the Bearcats edged out the Catamounts for the final spot in the field.
On Long Island, Stony Brook earned the No. 2 seed and a bye in the quarterfinals with a 5-0 win over Maine at LaValle Stadium. Colleen McKenna scored twice and added an assist, while Kate Collins also had a pair of goals. The loss solidified Maine as the No. 5 seed for the second straight year.
In West Hartford, Boston University's Casey Brown scored off a corner kick with 12 seconds left in double-overtime to give her team a 1-0 win over Hartford. With the win, the Terriers became the first team to complete an unbeaten and untied America East slate since the Terriers accomplished the feat in 2000.The loss locked the Hawks in as the No. 4 seed and gave New Hampshire, which was idle on Sunday, the No. 3 seed.
