CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- New Hampshire forward Michelle Sheehan, who scored two goals, and Stony Brook goalkeeper Marisa Viola, who did not allow a goal, were named America East Co-Players of the Week on Tuesday (October 9). Sheehan (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) scored a goal in each game as New Hampshire improved to 3-0-0 atop the America East standings. She scored her fourth game-winning goal in the 3-0 win over Albany Sunday.
Viola (Cutchogue, N.Y./Mattituck) extended her streak of scoreless minutes to 644:38 with two more shutouts this week. She made 11 saves on the week, including seven in a scoreless draw at Hartford on Thursday.
Orelli (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) scored the game-winning goal in a 2-0 decision over Binghamton on Sunday. It was her second goal of the season.
TEAM NOTES
Albany Great Danes
UAlbany (3-6-3, 0-3-0 America East) dropped a pair of conference matches this week to Boston U. and New Hampshire... The Great Danes fell 4-0 to Boston U. on Thursday, Oct. 4 at Varsity Field... UAlbany then fell 3-0 at New Hampshire on Sunday, Oct. 7... Great Danes goalkeeper Maria Liguori recorded double-digit saves in both losses... Liguori made 11 stops against Boston U. and then posted 10 saves in the loss to New Hampshire... Uju Ogbuawa and Teresa Boring led the UAlbany attack, taking five shots each over the two matches... The Great Danes will return to action on Thursday when they host America East Conference foe Binghamton at Varsity Field at 3 p.m.
Binghamton Bearcats
Binghamton (2-8-2, 1-2 America East) split a pair of games during the week, earning the team's first conference win of the season in the process. The Bearcats put up a season-high four goals in a 4-2 win over Vermont and then were promptly shut out by Hartford three days later... Senior foward Kim Povill (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) scored twice in a 3:41 span early in the second half to pace Binghamton in the win over the Catamounts. Povill added an assist later in the game and leads the team with 12 points... Senior forward Danielle White (Haddon Township, N.J./Haddon Township) scored one of the longest goals in program history when she took advantage of Vermont pressing forward and launched a 50-yard shot that rolled all the way to the net with just four seconds left in the contest. It was her fourth goal of the season... Senior back Katie Kerrigan (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush) converted a first-half penalty kick for her first goal of the season... On Sunday, the Bearcats surrendered two second-half goals in the loss to Hartford. Binghamton put nine shots on goal but couldn't get on the board and suffered the team's fourth shutout of the season.
Boston University
(5-5-2, 2-0-0 America East) defeated Albany (3-6-3, 0-3-0 AE), 4-0, on Thursday afternoon at Varsity Field in Albany, N.Y... Junior Marisha Schumacher-Hodge (Pittsburgh, Pa./Schenley) sparked the BU offense with one goal and two assists in the victory... Sophomore Casey Brown (Natick, Mass./Natick) netted the game-winning goal just six minutes into the game, while classmate Emily Pallotta (Andover, Mass./Andover) and freshman Stephanie Croghan (McLean, Va./Potomac) added insurance goals for the Terriers. It was Croghan's first collegiate goal. Seniors Christina Reuter (Madison, Wis./LaFollette) and Lauren Stewart (Pleasanton, Calif./Amador Valley) shared in the shutout... On Monday, the Terriers battled Dartmouth to a 1-1 draw at Nickerson Field... Brown struck again with a goal in the 40th minute, however, the one-goal edge would not hold up as the Big Green evened the score early in the second half... BU will face Maine on Thursday at 3:00 in Orono before hosting UMBC on Sunday at 1:00.
Hartford Hawks
Hartford (3-5-3, 1-0-1 America East) opened conference play last week with a scoreless tie against Stony Brook and a 2-0 victory at Binghamton. The Hawks are now undefeated in their last 12 games against conference opponents... Freshman Michelle Orelli (Huntington, N.Y/Huntington) scored the game-winning goal against the Bearcats in the second half on Sunday. The goal came on a header off a corner kick served up by junior Kacey Busque (Manchester, Conn./Manchester), who added the game's second goal eight minutes later... Senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Cook (Halifax, Nova Scotia/Halifax Grammar) returned to action last week after missing two games. She recorded a pair of shutouts for the week and made eight saves. She has posted shutouts in her last four games and hasn't allowed a goal in her last 390 minutes... Hartford will face UMBC and Maine this week. The Hawks make the trip to Baltimore on Thursday, October 11 and will host the Black Bears on Sunday, October 14.
Maine Black Bears
Maine (4-4-2, 2-0-0 America East) played just once this week, but pulled out a 1-0 overtime win over UMBC on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field in Orono ... The Black Bears got the game-winner from Kim Stephenson (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) off her own corner kick at the 96:35 mark of the first overtime ... Stephenson’s kick sailed towards and the goal and as it did, the ball deflected off the goalkeeper’s hand and into the net for the winning tally ... It marked Maine’s fourth win in its last six contests (4-1-1) ... All four of Maine’s wins this season have come via shutouts ... The Black Bears have outscored the opposition 13-0 in those four wins ... Goalkeeper Jasmine Phillips (Nepean, Ontario/Merivale H.S.) needed to make just on save in the contest, as the Black Bear defense limited the Retrievers to just four shots ... Maine posted 23 shots in the game ... Phillips has now yielded a goal or less in 28 of her 30 contests dating back to the beginning of last season ... Maine returns to action this Thursday with a home game versus Boston University at 3 p.m., at Alumni Field ... The Black Bears will also travel to Hartford on Sunday to face the Hawks at 1 p.m.
UMBC Retrievers
UMBC (1-9-2, 0-3-0 America East) was shut out twice last week and has now lost four in a row... The Retrievers have not scored since the 80th minute of a 1-1 tie with Sacred Heart on Sept. 21, a span of nearly 400 minutes... UMBC dropped its first conference home game, 2-0, to New Hampshire on Oct. 4, then fell on the road to Maine, 1-0 in overtime, on Oct. 7... Freshman forward Ashley Singer (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) took seven of UMBC’s 14 shots against the Wildcats... Junior goalie Christine Bacinski (Hampstead, Md./Mount de Sales) tied a career high with eight saves against the Black Bears... Nine of the Retrievers’ 10 goals and 20 of their 27 points this season have been scored by freshmen... Singer leads the team with three goals and six points... Senior forward Jessica Young (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) is the lone upperclassmen with a goal this year... Young ranks fifth all-time at UMBC with 24 career goals, and she is tied for sixth with 55 career points... The Retrievers have a tough week ahead of them as they face the last two America East champions... UMBC hosts defending champion Hartford on Oct. 11, then hits the road again to head to Boston University on Oct. 14.
New Hampshire Wildcats
New Hampshire (7-4-1, 3-0-0 America East) went 2-0 last week, blanking UMBC, 2-0, on the road, and shutting out Albany at home, 3-0 ... The pair of shutouts give the Wildcats five on the season ... Marianne Rivard (West Kingston, R.I./LaSalle Academy) recorded her second game-winning goal in as many games to sink the Retrievers ... Rivard also tallied an assist on Michelle Sheehan’s (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) sixth goal of the season that gave the Wildcats some insurance ... Freshman Amy Avitabile (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) recorded her second assist of the season on Rivard’s game winner ... Sophomore goalkeeper Ally Yost (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) made five saves to post her third shutout of the season ... Sheehan scored her conference-leading fourth game-winning goal of the season to lead the ?Cats past Albany ... Junior Julie O’Shaughnessy (Manchester, N.H./Governor Dummer Academy) gave the ?Cats insurance with the first goal of her career ... She also picked up an assist on Sheehan’s game-winner ... Sophomore Shaunna Kaplan (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) scored her first goal of the season to cap the scoring for UNH ... Sophomore goalkeeper Nikki Golding recorded six saves to pick up her second shutout of the season, and run her record to 4-1-1 ... Golding is currently ranked 38th in the nation in goals-against-average (0.64) ... Junior Caitlin Whelan (Weymouth, Mass.) recorded another point, tallying an assist on Sheehan’s goal.
Stony Brook Seawolves
Stony Brook (5-2-4, 2-0-1 America East) had recorded a win and a tie last week. Marisa Viola and the Seawolves defense have now posted six straight shutouts. Stony Brook is 2-0-4 during the scoreless streak and is now unbeaten in its last seven matches. Junior Brooke Barbuto notched her second goal of the season in the Seawolves 1-0 victory over Vermont on Sunday on a 30-yard free kick in the 78th minute. The Seawolves host two matches this week and are unbeaten at home so far this season (3-0-2). The Seawolves 0-0 tie against Hartford on Tuesday was their fourth of the season which tied an NCAA Division I record for scoreless ties in a season. Michigan also had four in 2006.
Vermont Catamounts
Vermont (1-10-1, 0-3-0 America East) returned to Centennial Field for the first time in 35 days and after traveling over 7,000 miles during a nine-game road swing ... Vermont dropped two conference games on the week ... The Catamounts fell 4-2 at Binghamton despite a strong comeback attempt after trailing 3-0 ... Sophomore forward Carson Laderoute (Rutland, Vt./Rutland) scored two goals in a six-minute span, her first two of the year, to lead the charge, but it wasn’t enough ... Vermont also fell 1-0 to Stony Brook on a free kick that hit a goal post and deflected into the net ... Vermont looks to snap an 11-game winless streak when it closes out the non-conference schedule at Harvard on Wednesday (Oct. 10) and hosts New Hampshire on Sunday (Oct. 14) at 1:00pm.
