Geary and Shute Earn Co-Players of the Week in Field Hockey

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- New Hampshire's Sam Geary (Norwood, Mass./Norwood), and Boston University's Sarah Shute (Lincolnville, Maine/Somers (N.Y.)) and Kim Kastuk (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) were all recognized by the conference in field hockey's week 6. Geary and Shute shared the America East Field Hockey Player of the Week honor, while Kastuk captured the conference's Rookie of the Week award for the second consecutive week and the third time overall this season. Geary scored the game-winning goal at 100:00 against Maine to give the Wildcats their first conference win. The gamewinner came on an untimed penalty corner at the end of double overtime. Geary's effort on the defensive end of the field helped limit the Black Bears to seven shots on goal in 100 minutes.

Shute recorded her second hat trick of the season--and fourth of her career--to help Boston University post a 4-1 conference victory at Fairfield on Friday. She opened the scoring in the 12th minute before adding a pair of goals in the second half. All three of the senior's goals were unassisted.

Kastuk made eight saves against second-ranked, undefeated Maryland on Sunday in College Park, including several spectacular stops to keep the game close. The goalkeeper also played the first half against Fairfield, making one save.

Team Notebooks:

No. 17 Albany (11-3 overall record, 3-0 America East record) went undefeated in two games last week, stretching the unbeaten streak to six straight games... The Great Danes defeated Vermont, 1-0, on Saturday before claiming a 3-0 win over Fairfield at home on Sunday... Sophomore forward Nicole Savage (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./James M. Coughlin) scored the gamewinner against Vermont, and continues to lead the team with 11 goals and three assists for 25 total points... Sophomore defender Jess Lindsey finished with one goal and two assists last weekend... She assisted on Savage’s goal against Vermont and scored the gamewinner versus Fairfield, while also recording an assist against the Stags... Junior goalkeeper Ashley Ross (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) earned her fifth shutout win of the season against Vermont and combined for a shutout with freshman keeper Christine Hoffman (Mertztown, Pa./Brandywine Heights) against Fairfield... Ross, who made four saves in the two games, is recording a 0.89 goals against average and a .828 save percentage on the season... Freshman midfielders Chelsea Neff and Sam Daly both scored goals against Fairfield... The Great Danes, who continue to be ranked in the STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll, visit non-conference opponent Colgate in their only game of the week on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

No. 13 Boston University (10-4, 2-0 America East) picked up its second America East victory in a 4-1 decision at Fairfield on Friday before dropping a hard-fought 3-1 contest against second-ranked and undefeated Maryland on Sunday... The Terriers reached the 10-win mark for the fourth straight season and for the 19th time in the last 21 years... Boston U. held Maryland to a season-low two penalty corners in front of a record crowd of 1,784, as the game served as the opener of a doubleheader that also featured an international exhibition that pitted Team USA against Japan... Head coach Sally Starr and Maryland mentor Missy Meharg each entered Sunday's contest with 340 career victories... America East Co-Player of the Week Sarah Shute (Lincolnville, Maine/Somers (N.Y.)) recorded her second hat trick of the season in the win over the Stags and now has team highs in both points (25) and goals (11)... Junior Holly Wiles (Harare, Zimbabwe/Arundel School) tallied the game-winning goal against Fairfield and assisted on the team's lone goal against the Terrapins... Sophomore Gabby Hajjar (Ottawa Hills, Ohio/Ottawa Hills) scored her fifth goal of the season, answering an early goal by Maryland to ensure a 1-1 score at halftime... America East Rookie of the Week goalkeeper Kim Kastuk (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) made eight saves against the Terrapins... Seniors Pam Spuehler (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) and Hayley Hamada (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual) each assisted on Wiles' goal versus Fairfield.

Fairfield (2-11, 0-3 America East) dropped two conference matches last week. Senior goalkeeper Liz Thomas continues to be one of the nation's leaders in saves per game, checking into the week with 8.7 saves per game. She increased that number with 14 saves against Boston University and seven in the Albany game, raising her average to 9.0 per outing...The Stags played their second and third nationally-ranked team last week when they battled #14 Boston University and #16 University of Albany. Fairfield played #4 University of Iowa earlier in the year...Amy Hosking scored her second goal of the season in a 4-1 loss to Boston University, giving her five points for the season (two goals, one assist)...The Stags return to non-conference action this week with games against Sacred Heart (10/10), at Siena (10/12), and versus Robert Morris (10/14).

Maine (4-8, 0-2 America East) dropped its lone game of the week, a 2-1 double overtime decision to New Hampshire... Maine took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Jackie D'Amato (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc) midway through the second half, but UNH tied the game just under 15 minutes later... The Wildcats then got the gamewinner in double overtime... For D'Amato, it was her second goal of the season... Maine goalie Rebecca Giroux (Augusta, Maine/Cony) made 12 saves in goal for the Black Bears... The 12 saves were a season-high for Giroux... The game was the fourth overtime game of the year for the Black Bears... The three previous overtime games has been decided in single overtime... Five of Maine's eight losses this season have been by just one goal... The Black Bears return to action on Friday, Oct. 12 when they host Boston University... Maine then plays it final non-conference game of the season on Sunday, Oct. 14 when it faces Dartmouth in Hanover, N.H.

New Hampshire (7-6, 1-1 America East) improved its home record to 5-1 on the season with a 2-1 victory in double overtime against league rival University of Maine on October 6 ... It marked UNH’s second consecutive game decided by two overtimes and the third game overall decided beyond regulation for the Wildcats; UNH is 2-1 in those games ... A pair of backs combined to produce the game-winning goal on a penalty corner as America East Co-Player of the Week Sam Geary (Norwood, Mass./Norwood) scored off a pass from Kiera Williams (Dover, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas) ... Cally Cooke, another back, (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) tallied her first career points when she scored on a penalty stroke vs. Maine to tie the score, 1-1, in the 68th minute ... UNH matched its season high for shots with 24 vs. the Black Bears ... The 14 penalty corners in that game also matched UNH’s season high ... This game continued the trend of close battles between UNH and Maine ? seven of the last eight games have been decided by one goal; four of the last six meetings have gone into overtime; and five of the last six games at Memorial Field have needed OT to determine the victor ... New Hampshire, who is now receiving votes in Tuesday's STX/NFHCA Division I poll, plays five of its last seven regular-season games away from home.

Vermont
(9-5, 1-1 America East) went 1-1 on the week with a 5-2 victory at home over Dartmouth and a 1-0 loss to #16 Albany on the road ... Against the Big Green, eight different Catamounts registered at least one point... Senior Danielle Collins (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) scored twice while junior Maegan Luce (Hartford, Vt./Hartford) and sophomore Megan Maynard (Waterbury Center, Vt./Harwood) each had a goal and an assist ... The five goals scored were the most for the Catamounts this season and the most since they netted six in a win over Massachusetts on October 11 of last year ... UVM is now 8-1 when scoring first this season and has won 20 of its last 23 in those situations ... Vermont is 5-1 at home this season and receiving votes in Tuesday’s STX/NFHCA Division I poll... On Saturday the Catamounts dropped their first league contest of the season to the Great Danes ... Four of Vermont’s five losses this season have come against ranked opponents ... The Catamounts return to action on Saturday when they host New Hampshire in a league showdown at Moulton Winder Field (1 p.m.).
