America East Response to UAlbany-Stony Brook Women's Basketball Altercation

Upon review of an altercation that occurred during the January 23, 2019 conference women's basketball contest between the University at Albany and Stony Brook University, the America East Conference has conducted a thorough review of the incident, including an examination of all available video, the collection of all officiating reports and conversations with the America East Coordinator of Officials as well as administrators from both institutions. The Conference's investigation has resulted in the following action:

 

  • UAlbany student-athlete Khepera Stokes and Stony Brook student-athlete Shania Johnson will serve automatic one-game suspensions per their ejections for fighting in accordance with NCAA Rule 10, Section 15, Article 10. Stokes will serve her suspension during UAlbany's game vs. Hartford on Saturday, January 26 while Stokes will serve her suspension in Stony Brook's game vs. Vermont on Saturday, January 26. 
  • Both student-athletes have been issued a public reprimand for their conduct, which is in violation of America East's policies on sporting conduct and poses a potential health and safety concern to other student-athletes and themselves. 
  • No additional suspensions will be issued.
  • All parties are hereby put on notice that any future unsporting conduct shall be subject to additional disciplinary measures in accordance with relevant NCAA Women’s Basketball playing rules and America East Sportsmanship policies. 


The Conference office would like to recognize the cooperative nature in which both institutions addressed this incident.The America East expects its student-athletes and coaches to be mindful of their behavior and conduct at all times. We also support an environment that protects the health and safety of our teams. The well-being of our student-athletes is paramount and we will be vigilant to ensure that is not compromised.
