Lowell, Mass. – Day three of the 2017 America East Baseball Championship was headlined by two close games. UMBC took to the diamond for the first time and collected a one-run victory while Maine bounced back from Wednesday's loss with a win of their own.
UMBC 3, Stony Brook, 2 – Box Score | Highlights
Andrew Casali hit a leadoff home run for the Retrievers in their first game in nearly a week's time. Michael Austin threw 5.1 shutout innings, striking out six en route to a win. The Retrievers added runs in the fourth and fifth innings and the Seawolves fell just short of completing a late-inning comeback. Casali finished the day 3-for-4 with a pair of runs.
Maine 3, Stony Brook 0 – Box Score | Highlights
In an elimination game, Maine and Stony Brook looked aggressive early. But it was Nick Silva who stole the show, nearly pitching a complete game. Both teams looked poised defensively early on, including in the top of the second inning when Toby Handley threw out a runner at the plate to keep the game scoreless. Maine opened the scoring when Jonathan Bennett delivered a single with the bases loaded to drive in Jeremy Pena and Christopher Bec. It was not until the seventh inning when Maine pushed another run across as Pena capitalized on a Seawolves throwing error. Silva was pulled with two outs in the ninth after surviving several late situations with runners on base.
