Three America East institutions once again rank among the top 100 national universities in the country according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2017 Best College Rankings, which were announced on Tuesday. In addition, all eight of the conference's public institutions were chosen among the top 100 public universities nationally in the comprehensive rankings for the fourth-straight year.

- Only three other Division I conferences had more top-100 schools among non-FBS conferences than America East and the conference's three matched the Big XII.
- America East ranked in the top 10 overall (T-9) amongst Division I's 32 conferences with three top-100 schools.
- The conference placed 33 percent of its schools in the top 100, tied for the eighth-best percentage in the country.
- All nine America East schools ranked within the top 188 of the national universities rankings.
- America East ranks fifth behind only the Big Ten, Big XII, Pac 12 and SEC with eight institutions ranked among the top 100 public institutions in the country.
- Four America East schools ranked among the Top-100 institutions for veterans, based on participation in federal initiatives helping veterans and active-duty service members apply for, pay for and complete their degrees.
- UMBC was voted the 5th-most innovative school in the country and tied for 18th in undergraduate teaching.

The U.S. News rankings focus on academic excellence, with schools ranked on up to 15 measures of academic quality. Overall, the rankings emphasize student outcomes – including graduation and retention rates – which carry the most weight at 30 percent. The college ranking categories are based on the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, the most widely accepted classification system in U.S. higher education.
