BOSTON - Fresh off of leading Albany to its first-ever America East women's tennis title, the Great Danes' Jovana Kenic was named the conference's Player and Rookie of the Year Thursday to highlight the major award winners and All-Conference team.
Major award winners were determined in a vote by the conference's head coaches, who could not vote for their own team while the All-Conference honorees were put forward by their own coaches based on team championship placing.
Kenic, a freshman, posted a 28-5 singles record over the season playing throughout Albany's lineup. She went a perfect 2-0 at the top position in the America East Championship, including a win over Stony Brook's Yana Nikolaeva in the championship match. She is just the second player to earn Player and Rookie of the Year honors in the same season and first since 2009.
Hartford's coaching staff, led by head coach Torr Terranova, was named Coaching Staff of the Year.
Kenic was joined on the All-Conference team by teammates Dajana Ognjenovic, Alba Sala and Paulina Torres, who was named the Most Outstanding Player of the America East Championship. The quartet led Albany to a 14-7 record in 2016 and the program's first America East title and NCAA berth.
Stony Brook's Nikoleva, the Seawolves top singles player all season long, earned All-Conference recognition along with teammates Nadia Smergut and Elizabeth Tsvetkov.
UMBC's Laura Ambrozic and Maria Siopacha were chosen along with Binghamton's Shea Brodsky and Sara Kohtz and Hartford's Skyler Schaar.
