COLUMBIA, Md. - Binghamton advanced to the semifinals of the America East Women's Tennis Championship with win over Hartford in the opening round of the conference championship Friday afternoon. The fourth-seeded Bearcats beat the fifth-seeded Hawks, 4-0, to earn a date with top-seeded Albany Saturday.
Due to inclement weather, the match was moved indoors to the Green Spring Racquet Club and per conference policy, singles matches were played first. The Bearcats took the first four matches that went final, making doubles play unecessary.
Alexis Tashiro won her #5 singles tilt over Karolina Pilip, 6-1, 6-0, and Agatha Ambrozy closed out a 6-1, 6-0 win over Meredith Heitland at #3 minutes later. Shea Brodsky handled Hannah Goldman, 6-1, 6-2, at #4 singles putting the Hawks on the brink of elimination. Olga Ostrovetsky clinched the decision for Bearcats with a 6-1, 6-1 win at #6 over Angela Sabino.
Binghamton, which improved to 8-12 on the season, will face top-seeded Albany in the first semifinal match Saturday at 10 a.m. Second-seeded Stony Brook, the four-time reigning conference champion, will take on third-seeded UMBC in the second semi at 2 p.m. The winners will meet Sunday at noon with the conference title and an NCAA automatic bid on the line.
