BOSTON – A conference-record 778 student-athletes that played America East sponsored fall sports during the 2015-16 academic year, 68 percent of all competitors, have earned America East Honor Roll recognition for obtaining a semester grade-point average (GPA) of 3.00 higher. More than half (411) of those student-athletes achieved a 3.50 GPA or better and earned Commissioner’s Honor Roll status.
"Our student-athletes continue to excel in the classroom while also balancing the demands of being a Division I student-athlete," said America East Commissioner Amy Huchthausen. "Their achievements are a testament to their hard work and dedication to being a complete student-athlete."
UMass Lowell and University of New Hampshire tied for the most student-athletes (106) recognized on the fall Academic Honor Roll. University of Vermont came in third with 87 followed by University at Albany (80) and Binghamton University (80), University of Hartford (76), UMBC (69), Stony Brook University (61) and University of Maine (60). Associate members in field hockey Pacific (15), Stanford (14) and California (12) and UC Davis (12) also had honorees.
Binghamton boasts the highest percentage of fall student-athletes named to the honor roll with 76.9 percent acquiring 3.00 GPAs or better over the course of the semester. Four other schools- Maine (75.9), Albany (73.6), Hartford (72.3) and New Hampshire (71.1)- also had over 70 percent of their student-athletes achieve honor roll status.
America East is proud to have one of most comprehensive academic awards programs in the country. In addition to the Honor Roll, Presidential Scholar-Athlete awards are bestowed to student-athletes who graduate with a 3.75 GPA. The Elite 18 program recognizes elite students while All-Academic teams comprised of student-athletes that excel both academically and athletically are chosen in each of the conference’s 18 sports. The conference also Scholar-Athletes in each of its 18 sports as well as a male and female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Finally, the Academic Cup is presented to the institution whose student-athletes post the highest grade-point average during that academic year.
