BOSTON – Four America East student-athletes have been recognized as members of College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSida) Capital One Academic All-District teams.
Paula Heuser of Albany, and Holly Stewart of Maine were both selected to the Women’s At-Large First Team. Binghamton’s Jake Thomas was voted onto First-Team All District for baseball, and UMass Lowell’s Ariana Darcy was voted onto First-Team All District for softball.
As a sophomore, Heuser is a business major with a cumulative GPA of 3.71. She was named the America East Field Hockey Scholar Athlete of the Year, along with being named to the America East All-Academic Team, and NFHCA All-Academic Squad. This honor stacks upon the German native’s historic 2014-15 season; a year where she as already named an NFHCA First Team All-American and the NFHCA National Player of the Year.
Stewart is a four-year staple of the Maine Black Bear’s field hockey program. She is maintaining a 3.97 GPA while majoring in kinesiology and physical education. The British Columbia native was named the Presidential Scholar-Athlete last season; the University of Maine as the top scholar-athlete with the 2014 M Club Dean Smith Award also honored her. Stewart is currently playing with the Canadian national team as they pursue an Olympic birth and is a finalist for America East's Woman of the Year honor.
Thomas has been named to the 2015 Capital One Academic All-District Baseball First Team. Representing a 3.55 GPA in the School of Management, Thomas is one of three outfielders chosen to District one, which is comprised of seven states. Hailing from Merrick, N.Y., the senior won the John Bilos Award for career achievement earlier this week from Binghamton; this season Thomas is batting .351 with 18 extra-base hits while also leading the conference in both on-base percentage (.470), and slugging (.530).
Darcy caps off her senior year being named to the Capital One Academic All-District Softball First team. Studying Business Administration with an accumulative GPA of 3.84, Darcy was just recently voted onto the America East All-Academic Team for the second straight year. On the diamond this season, the Kingston, N.Y. standout played 44 games, batting .256, registering 21 walks and 16 stolen bases. She currently holds the program record for walks in a career, and sits top-five in stolen bases, triples, and home runs.
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
First-Team Academic All-District honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, which will be voted on later this month.
