BOSTON, MASS. – Albany took on both Sacred Heart and Binghamton at home this past week, and in addition to playing the Great Danes, the Bearcats took on fellow conference rivals Hartford and Stony Brook. The Hawks took on URI and RPI as well. Stony Brook took to the road for two contests against Binghamton and Fordham.
Player of the Week
Nadia Smergut, Stony Brook, Sophomore, New York, New York
- Nadia Smergut went 4-0 over the past week; winning both a doubles and singles match in Stony Brook’s two competitions against Binghamton and Fordham.
- The sophomore bested her conference competitors in No. one doubles with her partner Louise Badoche (8-2), and No. three singles (6-3, 7-5).
- On the road against the Rams, the New York resident once again pulled out a victory in doubles with Badoche, 8-5. In No. 2 singles, Smergut battled to earn a three set win, 6-3, 3-6, 7-4 (4).
- Stony Brook won both matches, and moved their season record to 10-1.
Women’s Tennis Notes
- In the first conference battle of the year, the Albany Great Danes bested the Binghamton Bearcats, 5-2. In doubles, Cheryl Kukkonen and Alba Sala teams to win a doubles match 8-2; the Purple and Gold would go on to win the doubles point with Dajana Ognjenovic and Ana Glumac also coming out victorious, 8-6.
- The singles winners for the Great Danes were Sala (6-1, 6-1), Glumac (0-6, 6-2, 6-4), Pau Torres, (7-6 (5), 6-3), and Kirsten Scott (6-1, 6-2). The clinching match for Albany was Torres in the fifth singles match.
- The Binghamton Bearcats had a busy week, taking on two other conference opponents, along with the aforementioned Albany. Against the Great Danes, the Vestal, N.Y. school did have some victories in their 5-2 team defeat: Alexis Tashiro/Shea Brodsky won in doubles, 8-7 (3), Kayta Medianik (6-3, 3-6, 6-1) took the No. 1 singles match, and Sara Kohtz won the No. 3 singles match (6-2, 6-0).
- Over the past weekend, the Bearcats split matches against Hartford and Stony Brook, taking down the Hawks 5-1, and falling to the Seawolves, 5-2. Against Hartford, BU won five of the six singles matches: Tashiro (6-4, 7-5), Brodsky (6-3, 6-3), Annie DiMuro (4-6, 6-4, 6-1), Agatha Ambrozy (6-1, 6-0), and Olga Ostrovetsky (6-1, 6-0). There were no doubles matches against Hartford do to time restraints.
- Versus the Seawolves, Binghamton picked up two singles victories: Kohtz (7-5, 6-4), and DiMuro (6-3, 6-2).
- The Hartford Hawks at a four-match weekend, pairing up against Rhode Island, the aforementioned Binghamton, Chestnut Hill, and RPI. To wrap up the conference show down, the Hawks lone win against the Bearcats came with Katherine Long (6-0, 0-6, 7-6 (10-8)).
- Before the matchup with Binghamton, Hartford played against Rhode Island and fell, 5-2. The two points came by way via Meredith Heitland (4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6)) and Madeline Makings (7-6 (7-5), 6-3) in the fourth and fifth singles matches.
- The Hawks took on Chestnut Hill Sunday, but fell 7-0. In the second tilt for the Red on the fifth, Hartford was leading RPI three sets to none, however the match was halted do to rain.
- The Stony Brook Seawolves had two matches this past week. The Seawolves were able to pass by the Binghamton Bearcats, 5-2, and Fordham Rams, 7-0. In the America East matchup, Louise Badoche/Nadia Smergut (8-2), Polina Movchan/Yana Nikolaeva (8-6), Elizabeth Tsvetkov/Kristina Vozniak (8-4) all won their doubles matches. In the singles matches the following were winners: Movchan (6-2, 6-0), Smergut (6-3, 7-5), Adey Osabuohien (6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-3), and Badoche (6-3, 6-7, 6-2).
- Against Fordham, the Seawolves swept Rams in dominant fashion. Badoche/Smergut (8-5) and Movchan/Nikolaeva (8-2) won in doubles to secure the point for Stony Brook. In singles: Vozniak (7-6 (3)), Smergut (6-3, 3-6, 7-4 (4)), Tsvetkov (6-3, 6-2), Badoche (6-2, 4-6, 11-9), Nikolaeva (6-0, 6-3), and Cassandra Dis (6-4, 6-2) all won.
