Stony Brook's Movchan Garners Final #AETEN Weekly Award

Boston, Mass. – In the final week before the America East Women’s Tennis Conference Championship, all teams were looking to sharpen their games with a chance to win the conference title this upcoming weekend.  The University at Albany and Binghamton University both hosted NJIT, and lastly, Stony Brook hosted against UMBC.

Player of the Week
Polina Movchan, Stony Brook, Senior, Kiev, Ukraine

  • Polina Movchan went undefeated against UMBC in their conference tilt, winning the No. 2 doubles match with Yana Nikolaeva in a sweeping 8-0 fashion.
  • The senior then dominated in her No. 1 singles match against the Retrievers, defeating UMBC’s Madlena Kurasz in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-1.
  • Stony Brook’s women’s tennis team improved to 5-0 against America East teams this year, and finished the season with a 13-1 overall record.

Women’s Tennis Notes

  • Albany hosted NJIT on their senior day, and the Great Danes defeated the Highlanders, 6-1.  Albany swept the doubles matches, with the pairings of Kirsten Scott/Paulina Torres (8-5), Cheryl Kukkonen/Alba Sala (8-2), and Dajana Ognejenovic (8-6) picking up the wins.  In singles, the lone NJIT player to record a victory was Nathalia Habegger, who defeated Kukkonen in a close 7-5, 6-4, battle.
  • The remaning five singles matches fell in Albany’s lap: Sala defeated Caronlina Zanotta 6-2, 6-0; Paulina Torres bested Albany Rosas 7-5, 3-0 (retired due to injury); Mireille Hermans came out on top against Ines Vujkovac 6-3, 6-0; Ana Glumac won the match clinching point 6-1, 6-4; and Kirsten Scott took care of business against Valerie Carroll, 6-1, 6-0.
  • The Binghamton Bearcats also hosted the NJIT Highlanders for their final home contest, and the Green and Black came out on top with a clean 7-0 sweep.  Winning every match, the singles winners for Binghamton included Katherine Medainik over Zanotta (7-5, 6-4), Sarah Kohtz over Habbeggar (6-1, 4-6, 10-6), Alexis Tashiro over Rosas (6-1, 6-2), Shea Brodsky over Vajkovac (6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 11-9), Annie DiMuro (6-0, 6-0), and Agatha Ambrozy over Carroll (6-0, 6-0).
  • In doubles, the winners for Binghamton were the duos of Brodsky/Tashiro (8-1), Ambrozy/Medianik (8-1), and DiMuro/Kohtz (8-5).
  • Stony Brook completed an undefeated regular season conference record by beating UMBC over the weekend, 6-1.  Sweeping the doubles matches, the Seawolves victorious pairings were Nadia Smergut/Louise Badoche (8-1), Polina Movchan/Yana Nikolaeva (8-0), and Kristina Vozniak/Tsvetkov (8-0).  In singles, UMBC could only muster one point by way via Mariami Dolashvili (4-6, 6-4, 7-5).
  • The Stony Brook winners in singles matches were as follows: Movchan (6-3, 6-1); Smergut (6-1, 6-3); Adey Osabuohien (6-3, 6-1); Tsvetkov (6-2, 5-7, 6-1), and Badoche (6-3, 6-3).
  • The America East Women’s Tennis Championship is set to begin Friday, April 24th at 10:00 A.M., and it will run through Sunday August 26th, with the championship match set to serve at 12:00 P.M.
