Polina Movchan earns #AETEN POTW for Week 11

Boston, Mass. – The University at Albany had two matches over the past week, first playing against the Hofstra Pride, then challenging conference foe Stony Brook.  Binghamton travelled to Catonsville, Md. and took on the Retrievers of UMBC.  Hartford stayed in state and hosted New Haven, while NJIT took on three opponents in Marist, Hofstra, and St. John’s.  The Seawolves, in addition to serving up against the Great Danes, they also matched talents with Quinnipiac.

Player of the Week
Polina Movchan, Stony Brook, Senior, Kiev, Ukraine

  • Against the Albany Great Danes, Polina Movchan went 2-0, winning in No. 2 doubles and No. 1 singles.
  • In her doubles match against Albany, Movchan teamed with freshman Yana Nikolaeva to win 8-6.  In singles, the senior won against Albany’s top option in convincing, straight-set fashion, 6-0, 6-2.
  • Against the Quinnipiac Bobcats, the Ukraine native teamed up with her freshman comrade again to win 8-4.
  • The Seawolves won both against Albany, and Quinnipiac, improving to 12-1 on the season.

Women’s Tennis Notes

  • Albany split their two decisions over the past weekend, winning 5-1 against Marist, and falling 7-0 against Stony Brook.   Against the Pride, there were no doubles matches played, but the Purple and Gold won five of the six singles pairings.  Cheryl Kukkonen won the match-clinching contest 6-3, 6-1; other winners came from Ana Glumar (6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (3)), Paulina Torres (6-2, 6-2), Kirsten Scott (6-1, 6-2), and Chassidy King, who won by default with no opponent to oppose her.
  • Against Stony Brook, the Great Danes couldn’t muster any points, managing only a single win in a doubles get-together: Kirsten Scott/Paulina Torres came out on top over Nadia Smergut/Louise Badoche, 8-5.  The winners for Stony Brook in doubles were Polina Movchan/Yana Nikolaeva (8-6) and Kristina Vozniak/Elizabeth Tsvetkov (8-2).  Stony Brook swept Albany in singles: Movchan (6-0, 6-2), Vozniak (6-2, 7-6 (5)), Smergut (6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (12-10)), Aday Osabuohien (6-2, 6-2), Tsvetkov (6-2, 6-4), and Badoche (6-3, 6-2).
  • After the weekend, the Albany Great Danes have a 10-8 overall record, and a 1-1 America East conference record.
  • Binghamton and UMBC locked arms for a conference matchup, and the Black and Gold of the Retrievers rose to the top with a 6-1 victory.  UMBC was able to capture the doubles point with Mariami Dolashvili/Shannon Cleary (8-6) and Madlena Kurasz/Isabel Aldunate (8-6) eking out close wins.  Binghamton’s pairing of Sarah Kohtz/Katherine Medianik were winners 8-6.
  • In singles, the lone Binghamton Bearcat to come on top was Medianik in three sets, 4-7, 6-4, 6-2.  For UMBC, the five winners in singles were as follows: Dolashvili (6-2, 5-7, 6-4), Aldunate (6-3, 7-6 (3)), Hanna Victorsson (6-2, 6-1), Alice Taylor (5-7, 6-4, 6-2), and Cleary (6-3, 5-7, 6-2).  After their gathering, UMBC is now 5-12 on the year, 3-0 in conference play, and the Bearcats and 8-9, with a 1-3 America East record.
  • In their final match of the regular season, Hartford hosts New Haven and came out with a dominating 7-0 performance.  The Hawks took every match: Katherine Line/Skyler Schaar (6-2), Emily Sneddon/Meredith Heitland (6-0), and Hannah Goldman/Gianna Sabino (6-0) were victorious in doubles.  The singles winners included Long (6-3, 6-3), Schaar (6-1, 6-2), Sneddon (6-4, 6-1), Heitland (6-4, 6-1), Goldman (6-0, 6-0), along with Madeline Makings (6-1, 6-2).
  • With the win against New Haven, Hartford improved to 7-14 overall, and their conference ark heading into the America East Championship will stand at 0-2.
  • NJIT went 1-2 over the past week, picking out a tough-earned 4-3 win against Marist, while falling 0-7 to both Hofstra and St. John’s.  Against the Red Foxes, the Highlanders had to come from behind 3-0 to win; Carolina Zanotta (6-4, 6-3), Nathalie Habegger (3-6, 6-2, 7-5), Alba Rosas Garcia (7-5, 1-6, 6-4), and Ines Vujkovac (6-4, 7-6 (1)) all came out on top.
  • Against the Hofstra Pride, in Hempstead, N.Y., NJIT won a doubles match with the pairing of Vujkovac/Sydey Nowak, 7-5.
  • After picking up a win against Albany, Stony Brook won in Hamden, Connecticut against Quinnipiac, 6-1.  The doubles point came by way of Movchan/Nikolaeva (8-4), and Vozniak/Tsvetkov (8-4).  The Seawolves had five winners in the singles matches: Vozniak (6-2, 7-5), Osabuohien (6-2, 6-4), Tsvetkov (6-2, 6-1), Nikolaeva (6-3, 6-3), and Cassandra Dix (6-1, 6-0).
  • The America East Women’s Tennis Championship begins on April 24th and lasts through the 26th.
