BOSTON, MASS. – Albany travelled to Amherst, Massachusetts to take on UMass on Saturday, the 28th. Hartford ventured into New York and matched up against Hofstra and Wagner on the road. UMBC battled against the Richmond Spiders, and Stony Brook took on fellow conference competitor NJIT.
Player of the Week
Dajana Ognjenovic, Albany, Sophomore, Belgrade, Serbia
- Sophomore Dajana Ognjenovic won both matches in Albany’s loss to UMass Amherst on Saturday, March 28th.
- Ognjenovic won her No. three doubles match with partner Mirelle Hermans, 8-6. She would then go on to win the No. one singles match, coming from behind, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0.
- The Serbian native picked up the lone victory for Albany in the singles matches. With the team loss, Albany fell to 7-7 on the season.
Women’s Tennis Notes
- Albany fell to the University of Massachusetts, 5-2. Albany won two of the three doubles matches; Dajana Ognjenovic/Mirielle Hermans came out on top 8-6 in the No. three match, and Alba Sala/Cheryl Kukkonen won in a tiebreaker 10-8 in the No. two match. In singles, the lone Great Danes to not be beaten was Ognjenovic in the No. one singles match; the sophomore came from behind to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-0. Albany falls to 7-7 on the season.
- Hartford split over this part weekend, falling to Hofstra 0-7, and edging out Wagner 4-3. Against the Pride, the Hawks were unable to muster up a win, however against the Seahawks, it was the UHart who scored just enough. In doubles, Katherine Long/Skyler Schaar edged to an 8-7 (7-5) win, and Emily Sneddon/Meredith Heitland controlled the match to a 8-2 finish. The top two singles matches didn’t bring winning results for Hartford, but Schaar (6-2, 7-6, (10-8)), Heitland (6-3, 2-6, 6-3), and Goldman (6-4, 6-2) carried the Hawks to the overall victory in the No. three, fourth and six matches.
- UMBC fell to the Richmond Spiders, 4-2. Juniors Medlena Kurasz (6-3, 6-2), and Shannon Cleary (6-3, 6-3) won their singles matches for the Retrievers. The Black and Gold are now 4-11 on the season.
- Stony Brook won its fourth straight match, beating NJIT on the 29th, 7-0. Stony Brook won every match: in doubles the victorious pairings were Nadia Smergut/Louise Badoche (8-4), Polina Movchan/Yana Nikolaeva (8-0), and Adey Osabuohien/Becky Shtilkind (8-2). In singles the scores were Movchan (6-1, 6-2), Kristina Vozniak (7-5, 6-2), Smergut (6-3, 6-0), Elizabeth Tsvetkov (6-1, 3-0), Badoche (6-4, 6-4), and Cassandra Dix (6-0, 6-2). The Seawolves are now 8-1 on the year.
