BOSTON, MASS. – The University at Albany took on St. John’s; Binghamton University travelled to Niagara Falls, N.Y. to take on the Purple Eagles; Hartford battled against Colgate; UMBC competed against Old Dominion and VCU; Stony Brook took to the court at Harvard and Brown; and NJIT contested against the Knights of Fairleigh Dickinson.
Player of the Week
Elizabeth Tsvetkov, Stony Brook University, Freshman, Brooklyn, New York
- In the two matches for the Seawolves, both against ranked opponents, Elizabeth Tsvetkov did not lose a matching, finishing the two-day span 4-0.
- Against the No. 43 ranked in the nation according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, Tsvetkov teamed up with Kristina Vozniak to win their doubles match (6-3). She then went on to defeat her singles opponent in No. 4 singles 4-6, 7-6, 6-3.
- Stony Brook defeated Brown 5-2, which at the point kept the team undefeated on the season.
- The Seawolves did lose their perfect record the following day against No. 36 Harvard, 5 points to 2. In the loss, Tesvetkov and Vozniak won again in their doubles match (8-5), and the Brooklyn, New York native completed the undefeated week with a 7-5, 6-0 win.
- With defeating Brown, and competing well against Harvard, the Stony Brook Seawolves are nationally ranked for the first time in program history. The ITA places Stony Brook at No. 53 in the nation.
Women’s Tennis Notes
- The Albany Great Danes made their way to Queens, N.Y. and the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center to take on the Red Storm of St. John’s. The Purple and Gold fell 7-0, unable to win a match. Albany fell to 4-5 on the season.
- Binghamton University swept all matches and defeated the Niagara University Purple Eagles, 7-0. The victors for the Bearcats in doubles: Shea Brodsky/Tashiro (6-1, 6-0), Agatha Ambrozy/Katya Medianik (6-2), Annie DiMuro/Olga Ostrovetsky (7-5). For singles, the winners were as follows: Tashiro (6-1, 6-0), Medianik (6-2, 6-0), Brodsky (6-3, 6-1), DiMuro (6-1, 6-2), Ambrozy (6-1, 6-1), and Ostrovetsky (6-4, 6-1).
- The University of Hartford defeated Colgate in a thriller, 4-3. Emily Sneddon won her singles match 1-6, 6-4, 6,0. Following the sophomore’s comeback win, freshmen Katherine Long (1-6, 6-4, 6-2), Meredith Heitland (4-6, 6-4, 6-4), and Skyler Schaar all came away with victories.
- Shannon Cleary was the bright spot in the Retrievers’ loss to Old Dominion. The senior won UMBC’s lone match of the contest, taking her singles opponent down 6-3, 6-3.
- The Black and Gold fell for a second time this past week to the Rams of VCU. UMBC’s No. 1 doubles pair of Mariami Dolashvili and Cleary edged out the Rams top doubles squad 8-7. The lone point for the Retrievers in their 6-1 loss was via a drop out of a Ram.
- Stony Brook University, for the first time in program history, is nationally ranked. The Seawolves defeated No. 43 Brown 5-2 in Providence, Rhode Island. SBU stole the doubles point from the Ivy League member, Polina Movchan/Yana Nikolaeva (6-3), and Kristina Vozniak/Elizabeth Tsvetkov (6-3) securing the mark. In the singles portion, Stony Brook’s No. 1, Movchan (6-4, 6-1), and No. 2 Vozniak (2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (8)) preformed well to earn wins; Tsvetkov (4-6, 7-6, 6-3), plus Louise Badoche (6-3, 6-2) in the No. 4 and 5 slots each player their part as well.
- The Seawolves took on their second straight opponent in Harvard, however the Crimson bested the Seawolves. Stony Brook did take the doubles point with Movchan/Nikoleva (8-3), and Vozniak/Tsvetkov (8-5) each winning again, however only one singles match was to be had. Tsvetkov won here one-on-one challenge in straight sets 7-5, 6-0.
- On March 10th, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association ranked Stony brook No. 53 in the nation. The team is 6-1 this season, with their only loss coming to No. 36 Harvard.
- The Highlanders of NJIT squeaked by Fairleigh Dickinson and earned a 4-3 win. Carolina Zanotta and Nathalie Habegger recorded an 8-7 win in the first doubles match, and Sydney Nowak and Valerie Carroll won by default at third doubles. Zanotta won in straight sets at first singles, and Habegger added onto NJIT’s point total winning her solo match also. The last singles point corralled was by default and accredited to Tiffany Barnes.
