CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Four America East schools kicked off their tennis seasons over the past week. Albany took on Siena and Providence at Sportime in Schnectady, Binghamton travelled to West Point, New York to take on both Army and Sacred Heart, and UMBC matched up with fellow conference member NJIT. NJIT also had a match against LIU Brooklyn.
Women’s Tennis Player of the Week
Dajana Ognjenovic, Albany, Sophomore, Belgrade, Serbia
- Dajana Ognjenovic went 4-0 over the past week, picking up two wins in both doubles and singles.
- Against the Siena Saints, Ognjenovic teamed with Bowen and won their doubles match 6-3. Turning to singles, the sophomore defeated her oppononet 6-1, 6-3, clinching the matchup against Siena.
- Albany defeated Siena 5-2 to get their first win of the spring season.
- Against the Providence Friars, Ognjenovic once again teamed with Bowen and took down their doubles opponent 6-4. In singles, the Serbian remained undefeated on the year winning in straight set 6-1, 7-5.
- The Great Danes took down the Friars 5-2 to improve to 2-0 on the year.
Women’s Tennis Notes
- The University at Albany opened up their 2015 spring season with two 5-2 victories over Siena and Providence.
- Against the Saints, the Great Danes swept all three doubles matches, and then Alba Sala, Kirsten Scott, Chassidy King, and Dajana Ognjenovic all picked up wins in singles.
- Albany won two out of the three doubles matches against Providence; the tandems of Dajana Ognjenovic and Averie Bowen, and Cheryl Kukkonen and Alaba Sala won their respective matches 6-4 a piece.
- Binghamton travelled to Army and fell at West Point 5-2, but picked up a win against Sacred Heart, 6-1.
- Against Army, juniors Shea Brodsky and Alexis Tashiro recorded a 6-2 wins in doubles. The two single victories for the Bearcats came by way of Sarah Kohtz (6-1, 6-3) and Agatha Ambrozy (6-2, 6-1).
- The Bearcats won two of the three doubles matches against the Pioneers; Kohtz and Katherine Medianik won 6-3, and Annie DiMuro and Olga Ostrovetski added another W for Binghamton 6-2. Binghamton won five of the six singles matches: Kohtz (7-5, 2-6, 10-7), Tashiro (6-1, 6-2), DiMuro (6-2, 6-1), Ambrozy (6-2, 6-1), and Kayta Medianik (6-1, 6-0).
- Binghamton was supposed to have a third match against Seton Hall, but it was postponed due to inclement weather.
- UMBC held it’s fourth match of the year this week against NJIT on February 1st. The Retrievers entered the matchup against the Highlanders with a 1-2 record. The match was the first of the second of spring semester for NJIT; they had fallen to LIU Brooklyn in their first on January 31st.
- UMBC defeated NJIT 5-2 to improve their record to .500 as NJIT fell to 0-2. The Retrievers won two of the three doubles matches; senior Isabel Aldunate and sophomore Mariami Dolashvili won 6-0, and the European pairing of Hana Victorsonn and Charlotte Tonjann came out on top 6-3. The other doubles match was not finished.
- On the singles side, UMBC won four of the six matches. Madlena Kurasz (6-2, 4-6, 6-2), Isabel Aldunate (6-1, 6-0), Laura Ambrozic (6-0, 1-6, 7-5), and Shannon Cleary (6-1, 6-0) picked up wins for the Retrievers. Caroline Zanotta (6-2, 4-6, 6-2) and Rosas Garcia (2-6, 6-2, 6-1) garnered success for the Highlanders.
- In their earlier match against LIU Brooklyn, NJIT had one victor; Alba Rosas Garcia won a singles match 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
- Next on the docket in the America East: Albany travels to Syracuse, Binghamton hosts Fairliegh Dickinson, UMBC makes its way to Temple, and NJIT heads to Akron. Hartford begins its season on the 21st against Sacred Heart, and Stony Brook will begin their season against Connecticut on the 7th.
