Nearly Two-Thirds of AE Fall Student-Athletes Earn Honor Roll Status

BOSTON – Nearly two-thirds of the student-athletes who played America East sponsored fall sports in 2014, 694 in total, earned a semester grade-point average (GPA) of 3.00 or higher last fall and have earned garnered America East Honor Roll recognition as a result. More than half (400) of those student-athletes achieved a 3.50 GPA and earned Commissioner’s Honor Roll status.

"Our student-athletes continue to be impressive in the classroom, excelling academically while also balancing college life and the rigors of being a Division I student-athlete," said America East Commissioner Amy Huchthausen. "This achievement is a testament to their hard work and dedication to being a complete student-athlete."

For the third-straight year, University of New Hampshire had the most student-athletes (104) recognized on the fall Academic Honor Roll. UMass Lowell landed the second-most with 94 student-athletes. Hartford and UMBC tied for third with 74 apiece followed by, Albany (71), Vermont (70), Stony Brook (66), Binghamton (63) and Maine (59). Fairfield, an associate member for field hockey, each sent 10 squad members to the fall honor roll in their respective sports.

Maine boasts the highest percentage of fall student-athletes named to the honor roll with 77.6 percent acquiring 3.00 GPAs or better over the course of the semester. Hartford  (74.7) and New Hampshire (72.7) also had over 70 percent of their student-athletes achieve honor roll status, while UMBC (67.2) also had over two-thirds of its athletes achieve the honor.

Binghamton women’s cross country team had the highest percentage of honor roll recipients from a single team, with 88.9 percent of its stuent-athletes (8-of-9) being recognized. UNH led the volleyball squads with 87.5 percent of its players (14-of-16) acheiving the honor. Maine paced the way in field hockey (85 percent, 17-of-20) while Hartford had the best men's soccer percentage (65.4 percent, 17-for-26), UMBC did so in women's soccer (85.2 percent, 23-of-27) and men's cross country (76.2 percent, 16-of-21).

Vermont led the men’s cross country teams with 65 percent achievement (13-of-20), whi had 90.9 percent (10-of-11) of its team recognized while volleyball landed 94.1 percent (16-of-17) members on honor roll. The Hawks and UMBC tied at 85.7 percent (18-of-21) for the highest percentage in women’s soccer. UMass Lowell boasts a field hockey-high of 81 percent as 17 of its 21 players made honor roll status.

America East is proud to have one of most comprehensive academic awards programs in the country. In addition to the Honor Roll, Presidential Scholar-Athlete awards are bestowed to student-athletes who graduate with a 3.75 GPA. The Elite 18 program recognizes elite students while All-Academic teams comprised of student-athletes that excel both academically and athletically are chosen in each of the conference’s 18 sports. The conference also Scholar-Athletes in each of its 18 sports as well as a male and female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Finally, the Academic Cup  is presented to the institution whose student-athletes post the highest grade-point average during that academic year.
