CAMBRIDGE, MASS. – Albany travelled to Pennsylvania on this past weekend to take on Pennsylvania and Temple. Binghamton also matched up against the Owls, and then turned their attention to the Bonnies of St. Bonaventure. Drexel travelled to Catonsville, Maryland for a matchup against UMBC. NJIT had a double header at The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility in Newark, New Jersey against Sacred Heart and Saint Peter’s. Lastly, Stony Brook had matches on the road against Seton and Hall and Lehigh. Here is this week’s tennis Player of the Week:
Player of the Week
Nathalie Habegger, NJIT, Sophomore, Gland, Switzerland
- Nathalie Habegger went 4-0 in NJIT’s two matchups on February 15th against Sacred Heart and Saint Peter’s.
- Habegger teamed with Carolina Zanotta for both her doubles matches, picking up 6-1, and 6-3 victories respectively.
- In the singles matchups, Habegger proved herself a force, winning both matches without losing a set. The sophomore won 6-3, 6-2 against the Pioneers, and 6-1, 6-1 against the Peacocks of Saint Peter’s.
Women’s Tennis Notes
- The University at Albany first took on Pennsylvania University on the 13th. The Great Danes fell in a close match 4-3. Dajana Ognjenovic and Cheryl Kukkonen won their doubles match up 6-3, and victories in the singles matches came from Alba Sala (6-3, 6-4), Mireille Hermans (3-6, 6-2, 10-3), and Chassidy King (7-6 (8), 6-2).
- Albany’s second match of the weekend came against Temple; the Owls bested the Great Danes 5-2. Ognjenovic and Kukkonen teamed up and won their doubles match up 6-4; the lone singles victory came from Hermans in straight sets (6-3, 6-2).
- Binghamton University, like UAlbany, travelled down to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for a match against Temple. Bearcats lost in a 5-2 decision, ending their three game winning streak. The wins for BU came Sara Kohtz (6-4, 6-4) and Agatha Ambrozy (6-1, 6-7 (5-10), 10-7) in their singles matches.
- Following the loss to the Owls, the Bearcats rebounded and took down the Bonnies of St. Bonaventure. Binghamton won all but one match: the doubles partnerships of Shea Brodsky/Alexis Tashiro (6-3), Agatha Ambrozy/Katherine Medianik (6-2), and Sara Kohtz/Annie DiMuro (6-2) together grabbed the doubles point. The lone Bearcat to suffer a loss in their singles match was Brodsky; here are the winners: Kohtz (7-5, 6-3), Tashiro (7-5, 7-5), DiMuro (6-2, 6-1), Medianik (6-1, 6-3), and Olga Ostrovetsky (6-3).
- UMBC fell in a tight match against undefeated Drexel by a score of 5-2. The Retrievers to take home wins were Mariami Dolashvili (6-3, 6-3), and Isabel Aldunate (4-6, 6-4, 6-3).
- Stony Brook University won their two matches over the past week, defeating both Seton Hall and Lehigh. The Seawolves bested the Pirates 6-1, winning five of the six singles matches and earning the doubles point as well. The winning doubles partners: Cassandra Dix/Polina Movchan (8-2), and Becky Shtilkind/Kristina Vozniak (8-2). The winners in their individual matches were Vozniak (4-6, 6-1, 7-6(5)), Adey Osabouhein (7-5, 2-6, 10-7), Movchan (6-1, 6-1), Elizabeth Tsvetkov (6-2, 6-2), and Louise Badoche (6-4, 6-4).
- Seawolves won their second game of the last week against Lehigh by the same tally as their first, 6-1. Seawolves swept the Hawks in doubles: Badoche/Osabuohien (8-3), Maocvhan/Dix (8-2), and Vozniak/Shtilkind (8-3) were the winning pairings. Five Stony Brook players picked up points in singles: Vozniak (2-6, 6-4, 6-2), Movchan (6-1, 6-2), Badoche (6-2, 6-0), Dix (6-4, 7-6(5)), and Shtilkind (6-1, 6-2).
- NJIT took on Sacred Heart in the first matchup of their double header. The Pioneers bested the Highlanders 6-1. NJIT had two victors; Habegger in her singles match won 6-3, 6-2, and the tandem of Habegger/Carolina Zanotta won their doubles 6-3, 6-2.
- In the second game of their doubleheader, the Highlanders picked up their first win of the season over Saint Peter’s, 6-1. The doubles pair of Carolina Zanotta/Habegger came out victorious once again in doubles (6-3); they weren’t alone as Alba Rosas Garcia/Ines Vujkovac (6-3), and Valeria Carroll/Tiffany Barnes (by default) each combined to pick up wins. The Highlanders dominated in singles: Zanotta (6-3, 6-0), Habegger (6-1, 6-1), Roses Garcia (7-6 (4), 6-2), Vujkovac (6-2, 6-3), Barnes (6-1, 6-2), and Carroll (by default) all were winners.
