CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Five America East member institutions that sponsor tennis received recognition as they had student-athletes recognized for their performances on the court and in the classroom. Of those institutions, Binghamton, UMBC, Stony Brook and associate member NJIT had student-athletes slated to the 2014 America East Women’s Tennis All-Academic Team, while Binghamton and Hartford student-athletes earned spots on the America East Men’s All-Academic Team. Each nominee must meet the set standards of a cumulative 3.30 or better GPA, have been a starter or significant reserve this past year and participated in at least 50 percent of the teams matches in 2014.
2014 America East Women’s Tennis All-Academic Team
Kim Berghaus, Sr., UMBC (Offenbach, Germany)
- Posted a 3.84 GPA in Physics and minored in economics and mathematics.
- Earned President’s List honors by posting a 4.0 GPA during three if her semesters as a Retriever.
- Received the department's Matt Skalsky Female Outstanding Scholar-Athlete Award, which goes to the highest-performing scholar-athlete.
- Accepted to the physics graduate programs at Johns Hopkins and U. Texas, but will defer enrollment to work in research at Harvard medical school for one year.
- Won six consecutive matches at the top flight down the stretch to lead the squad to the conference semifinals and earned first team honors as a result.
Cassandra Dix, Jr., Stony Brook (Northamptonshire, United Kingdom)
- Sports a perfect 4.0 GPA in Biochemistry.
- All-America East first team doubles and second team singles selection
- Went 12-2 in dual singles matches and posted a 7-1 mark at No. 5 singles and 17-3 overall in singles.
- Teamed up with Polina Movchan to go 8-0 in dual matches from the No. 2 spot.
- Overall doubles mark was 14-3 on the year.
Ksenia Kuzmenko, Sr., NJIT (Moscow, Russia )
- Accumulated a 3.93 GPA in business.
- She combined for a 19-8 overall first singles mark and finished 16-8 at first doubles.
- Recognized by the New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women and received the "Woman of the Year" Award.
- Earned NJIT Female of the week twice(3/31/14, 4/28/14).
- 2014 America East first-team singles and first-team doubles pick with teammate Jana Luste.
- Helped lead the Highlanders to a second-place finish in the 2014 America East tournament in their first year as an associate member.
Megan Guidry, NJIT, Sr., (Baton Rouge, La.)
- Accrued a 3.72 Biomedical Engineering GPA.
- Will be getting masters in Biomedical Engineering in New Zealand.
- Combined for a 4-6 singles record and went 5-6 in doubles competition.
- Part of the Highlander squad that finished as the runners-up in the 2014 America East Championship.
Katya Medianik, Binghamton, Jr., (Brooklyn, N.Y.)
- Had the highest GPA on the Bearcat roster with a 3.60 GPA in Philosophy, Politics & Law (PPL).
- SAAC member who is active on campus as a member of the Russian Student Union.
- Earned all-academic honors a season ago and has been a member of the Binghamton AD Honor Roll and America East Commissioner's Honor Roll as well.
- Was an all-conference pick for the second-straight year after going 11-18 overall at the top of the lineup.
- Helped her team grab the two seed in the league tournament as a two-year captain.
- Posted a 7-10 mark in dual competition to help push the Bearcats to a record of 8-11 in duals this season.
Jackie AltanSarnai, Stony Brook, So., (Hinsdale, Ill.)
- Has tallied a 3.38 Business Management GPA, earning her a spot on the America East 2012-13 Winter/Spring Honor Roll.
- First team All-Conference in singles as she went 9-5 in dual matches.
- Posted a league record of 4-0 and went 14-9 overall in singles play.
2014 America East Men’s Tennis All-Academic Team
Ismael Dinia, Binghamton, Jr. (Rabat, Morocco)
- Collected a 3.62 GPA in Management Finance.
- First team All-America East selection in singles off a 9-5 record in dual matches, 4-0 in America East matches and a 14-9 overall mark in singles play.
- Part of a Bearcat squad that won seven-straight conference titles with their most recent coming in 2014.
Robin Lesage, Binghamton, Jr. (Mullhouse, France)
- Accrued a 3.92 GPA in Management & Marketing, landing him a seat on the Binghamton AD Honor Roll.
- Starter and key member of a Binghamton team that captured its seventh-consecutive America East title in 2014.
- Won 21 singles matches, including 6-1 record at the No. 3 spot to be picked as a first team all-conference singles member.
- Captured singles flight at Princeton Invitational in the fall.
Florian van Kann, Binghamton, Sr. (Frankfurt, Germany)
- A member of the Bearcat AD Honor roll as he accumulated a 3.96 GPA in Management Finance.
- Contributed as a starter for the Bearcat squad that captured its seventh-straight league crown 2014.
- A member of the second-team all-conference squad in singles play as he posted a team-best 11-4 in duals, including an 8-3 record at No. 6.
- Won his match against Stony Brook in championship final.
Alexander Maisin, Binghamton, So. (Overijse, Belgium)
- Posted a 3.79 GPA as a System Science & Industrial Engineering major to earn him a spot on the Binghamton AD Honor Roll.
- Key starter of the Binghamton lineup that took home the conference championship for the seventh-straight year in 2014.
- Had 27 combined wins, including nine matches that were primarily at No. 2 singles en route to a landing a spot on the all-conference first team in both singles and doubles.
- Went a team-high 14-7 in doubles, including a 9-5 mark from the No. 1 position.
Jordan Badenko, Hartford, Sr. (Sydney, Australia)
- Earned a near-perfect 3.97 GPA in Insurance & Finance, grabbing a spot on the Hartford President’s List.
- Won the Hartford Athletics’ Excellence in Business Award.
- Runner-up in the top flight at the UConn Invite in September, in which he posted a pair of wins including a 6-2, 6-1 quarterfinal win and a 5-7, 6-4, 10-7 semifinal victory.
- Made 10 of his 11 starts from the No. 1 singles position.
- Posted six wins in dual-match doubles play to tie with teammate Nicholas Sharwarko for the team lead, with four of those victories coming at the top position.
Alex Holdstein, Hartford, Sr. (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.)
- Sports a four-year collegiate GPA of 3.79 in Management
- Earned a spot on the University of Hartford President’s List and the America East Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
- Recognized on the America East Presidential Scholar-Athlete team with a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or higher.
