CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A pair of new faces are featured in this week’s America East Men’s and Women’s Tennis Players of the Week recognitions. Albany earns its first award in Alba Sala who posted a perfect 5-0 collective record. Hartford also grabs its first award as Alex Holdstein helped lift the Hawks to their first victory of 2014. Here’s a look at this week’s America East Tennis awards:
Women’s Tennis Player of the Week
Alba Sala, Fr., Albany
Barcelona, Spain
- Posted a 5-0 record on the week.
- Stepped into the No. 1 tandem spot with Cheryl Kukkonen to go 2-0.
- Registered a 3-0 singles mark, with two wins coming at the No. 5 position one at No. 4.
- On a four-match singles winning streak after winning 6-0, 6-1 in both of her No. 5 matches.
- Won 6-0, 6-0 at Providence from the No. 4 slot in a 4-1 format.
- Albany won 3-2 at Providence and 4-3 vs. Bryant.
Men’s Tennis Player of the Week
Alex Holdstein, Sr., Hartford
Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hastings
- Teamed up with Luis Motes at No. 2 doubles to defeat Wagner opponents, 8-0.
- Went 2-1 from the No. 3 singles position.
- Helped the Hawks earn the doubles point against Wagner.
- Defeated Boston U.’s Mario Sandoval, 6-3, 6-4.
- Was victorious over Wagner’s Sam Flaxman, 6-3, 6-4.
- Hartford won, 7-0, against Wagner.
Around the League
- UMBC’s Biyik Akinshemoyin registered a 1-0 No. 6 singles mark versus Xavier (6-2, 2-6, 7-5), to help lift the Retrievers over the Musketeers, 4-3, and snap a four-match losing streak.
- Stony Brook’s Polina Movchan captured two singles wins at No. 1 and two doubles victories (No. 1, No. 2) to better her dual match record to 6-3 at No. 1.
- Ashley Harel matched up with Katina Zampas at No. 1 double for a victory over Wagner, 8-6. She also won at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-3.
- The Hartford tandem of Jordan Badenko and Nicholas Sharwark went 3-0 at No. 1 doubles.
- UMBC sophomores Justin Carter, Melker Svard, and Eliott Loubatie won at Nos. 1,2, and 4 singles at William & Mary. Kamal Patel keyed the victory over Xavier with wins at No. 2 doubles and No. 5 singles and went 3-1 for the weekend. Svard became the first Retriever to reach the 10-win mark in singles this spring (10-6)
- The UMBC women (6-8) fell, 7-0, to Xavier in their first action since March 20. Returning from injury, Shannon Cleary competed in her first match of the season versus Xavier.
