UNH Holds Slim Lead Over Albany in Winter Commissioner's Cup Standings - AmericaEast.com
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Just one point separates University of New Hampshire and University at Albany in the 2013-14 America East Commissioner’s Cup standings following a winter season during which the two schools combined to win all five league championships.
The Commissioner’s Cup annually recognizes the strongest athletic program in America East as determined by a scoring system which rewards a school for success both during the regular season and championship competition in the conference’s 19 sports.
UNH won the conference’s women’s swimming and diving title and earned 86 points in the winter giving it 235 total points through the winter season. Albany, which won four of the five league winter championships, is just one point out of first with 234 points. UMBC is in third place with 210 points after being second following the fall season, while Stony Brook University remains in fourth place, just three points out of third, with 207 points. University of Hartford is in fifth place (161 points), while University of Vermont is sixth (160), University of Maine is seventh (134), Binghamton University is eighth (124) and UMass Lowell is ninth (80).
School Winter Sport Highlights
New Hampshire
• Leads the Commissioner’s Cup standings after the winter season for the first time.
• Captured second-straight women’s swimming & diving title.
• Accumulated the third-most points in women’s basketball, earning its best regular-season finish since the 2004-05 season (third) and reaching the semifinals of the league tournament for the second-straight year.
• Earned fourth-place finishes in both men’s and women’s indoor track & field.
Albany
• Won four of the five America East winter championships (men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor track & field) and earned 128 points over the
winter, 100 more than any other school.
• Became the league’s first repeat men’s basketball champion in seven seasons.
• Swept the women’s basketball regular-season and tournament titles for the second-straight year and became just the fourth program to win three-straight league
crowns.
• Swept the men’s and women’s indoor track & field titles for the second-straight year, winning its ninth-consecutive men’s crown and fourth women’s championship
in the last four years.
UMBC
• Sits in third place after earning 62 points over the winter.
• Placed second in women’s swimming & diving and has finished first or second every year since 2006.
• Finished sixth in the men’s basketball standings, its best finish since 2009.
Stony Brook
• Earned 100 points during the winter, the second most of any America East school.
• Racked up the second-most points in men’s basketball, placing second in the regular season and reaching the league championship game for the third time in
four years.
• Accumulated the second-most points in women’s basketball, finishing second in the regular season and reaching the league title game for the second time ever
and first since 2002.
Hartford
• Totaled the fourth-most points in men’s basketball after finishing third in the regular season and advancing to the tournament semifinals for the third time in four
years.
• Had the fourth-most points in women’s basketball, placing fifth in the regular and reaching the semifinals.
Vermont
• Earned most points in men’s basketball by winning sixth regular-season title since 2002.
• Placed third at the women’s indoor track & field championship.
Maine
• Placed third in men’s indoor track & field.
• Women’s basketball’s fourth-place regular-season finish was its best since the 2004-05 season.
Binghamton
• Finished second in both men’s and women’s indoor track & field.
UMass Lowell
• Men’s basketball team finished in fifth place in the regular-season standings.
The scoring system for the Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner’s Cup is as follows: In sports where regular-season round robin competition is conducted, the first-place institution in the final standings receives four points times the total number of teams involved in conference play. The second-place institution receives four less points; third place receives eight less points, and so on. Additionally, the America East (tournament) champion receives two points times the total number of teams participating in the championship. The second-place institution receives two less points; third place receives four less points and so on down to the last-place institution which receives two points.
