CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The final America East Tennis Players of the Week go to two players who won in straight sets. Here’s a look at this week’s AE Tennis Players of the Week:
Women’s Tennis Player of the Week
Becky Shtilkind, So., Stony Brook
Brooklyn, N.Y./Leon Goldstein
- Posted a spotless record of 5-0 overall on the week.
- Went 2-0 from No. 6 singles position, including a triumph over AE opponent Binghamton (6-0, 6-1) heading into the tournament.
- Paired up as a tandem with Nadia Smergut to win twice from the No. 3 doubles position.
- Teamed up with Cassandra Dix from the No. 2 doubles spot to blank AE foe Hartford 8-0.
- Only dropped a single point over two doubles contests with scores of 8-1 against Fairfield and 8-0 over Binghamton.
- 11-2 in dual matches.
- Owns doubles record of 17-4.
Men’s Tennis Player of the Week
Sid Hazarika, So., Binghamton
Coventry, England/Ralph Allen School
- Logged a 5-0 overall record last week.
- Grabbed a 3-0 mark at the No. 1 singles slot.
- Has straight-set wins over Penn (6-2, 6-4) and league rivals Stony Brook (6-4, 6-4) and Hartford (6-1, 6-1).
- Won both tandem matches from the No. 3 position with Ismael Dinia, with victories over Penn (8-4) and Stony Brook (8-7).
- The reigning AE Player of the Year enters tournament play with 17 singles victories and 10 doubles wins.
Around the League
- Stony Brook’s Raphael Termat won all three singles matches at the No. 2 spot to move to 9-3 on the season. He has also upped his doubles record to 9-9, going 3-1 on the week.
- Despite the UMBC women dropping four of its last five matches, three have been hard-fought contest with identical 4-3 scores.
- Kim Berhaus won both singles matches against Richmond and Maryland, winning five-straight at No. 1 singles for a 6-3 record this spring.
- UMBC’s Josefin Stange-Jonsson and Mariami Dolashvili are tied for the team lead with 11 singles victories each.
- The UMBC Men have Melker Svard entering into the AE tournament with the most singles victories (14) and total wins (19) for the Retrivers this spring.
- The Retriever tandem of Daniel Gray and Alex Drean are 8-4 in doubles in 2014.
