CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – This week’s America East Tennis honorees took on three teams and won in singles in straight sets. Here’s a look at this week’s America East Tennis awards:
Women’s Tennis Player of the Week
Kim Berghaus, Sr., UMBC
Offenbach, Germany/Leibnizgymnasium
- Logged an overall 5-0 record last week.
- Tallied three wins at No. 1 singles and two wins at No. 2 doubles.
- Defeated non-conference opponents Georgetown (6-1, 6-0) and Coppin State (6-0, 6-0).
- Triumphed over AE foe Binghamton (6-1, 6-1).
- Claimed a pair of 8-2 doubles victories over Binghamton and Coppin State at the No. 2 slot when teamed up with Madlena Kurasz.
- Is 4-2 since moving up to the No. 1 spot.
Men’s Tennis Player of the Week
Melker Svard, So., UMBC
Gothenburg, Sweden/De la Gardie Gymnasiet
- Went 3-0 at No. 2 singles last week.
- Opened the week with a victory over Georgetown (6-4, 6-4).
- Won in convincing fashion on the courts of league rival Binghamton (6-3, 6-1).
- Closed out the week with a 6-1, 6-4 conquest against Coppin State.
- Improved to 14-6 in singles competition and heads into league play with four consecutive match wins.
- This is his second award of the season.
Around the League
- Stony Brook freshman Raphael Termat posted two singles victory at the No. 2 position against Fordham and NJIT. On the women’s side, Jackie AltanSarnai collected a 3-0 week, including victories at the No. 2 slot against AE opponents NJIT (6-4, 6-1) and Albany (7-6(3), 6-1). Her other win came in a 6-1, 6-0 decision against Manhattan at No. 1 singles.
- NJIT’s Martina Tripcovi posted a 2-0 record at No. 4 singles (6-1, 6-0) at Villanova and No. 3 singles (6-2, 6-4) at Stony Brook after having returned from shoulder surgery this fall.
- Katya Medianik won at No. 2 singles (6-4, 6-2) versus UMBC and in straight sets at No. 1 singles over Albany.
- Jordan Badenko defeated his Sacred Heart opponent on the road (6-3, 6-4) from the No. 2 singles position. He paired up with Nicholas Sharwarko at No. 1 doubles to beat Sacred Heart (8-5) and with Alex Holdstein to defeat AIC (8-4) at the No. 1 slot.
- Binghamton’s Ismael Dinia posted a weekly overall record of 2-0. He went 1-0 at No. 3 singles (6-3, 6-2) and 1-0 at the No. 4 doubles position with Sidhartha Hazarika to defeat their UMBC counterparts, 8-2.
