CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – America East men’s and women’s tennis is off and running for the 2013 season as teams begin to eye this year’s championships at UMBC April 26-28. Gaulthier Berret of the Retrievers and Polina Movchan from Stony Brook are the first Men’s and Women’s Players of the Week, respectively.
Berret (Lagny Sur Marne, France) was undefeated in both singles and doubles en route to reaching a career milestone. Competing against Drexel and Richmond, the senior earned his 50th career singles victory without dropping a set on the weekend and only losing one game in his 6-1, 6-0 win versus Drexel. Berret also earned a pair of wins from the No. 1 doubles position.
Movchan (Kiev, Ukraine) also had a perfect weekend as Stony Brook took on Connecticut. The sophomore led the Seawolves to a 9-8 win in No. 1 doubles action and then posted a convincing 6-1, 6-0 win in No. 2 singles. Movchan’s efforts helped her squad to a 6-1 victory over the Huskies.
America East Men’s Tennis Notes
- Binghamton fell to No. 46 Columbia, but freshman Sid Hazarika improved to 7-1 this spring at the No. 3 singles position.
- Boston U. had its date with Lafayette postponed this weekend, but is 3-0 in February against the likes of Sacred Heart, Quinnipiac and Bryant.
- Hartford picked up three singles wins and a win at No. 2 doubles versus Southern New Hampshire.
- Stony Brook did not play this weekend, but in its last match, Robert Forai earned a win in No. 4 singles action.
America East Women’s Tennis Notes
- Albany played a pair of matches in New Hampshire this weekend, with Irene Santos and Rocio Lopez earning wins in No. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, against Fordham.
- Alexis Tashiro had a hand in Binghamton’s only wins versus Buffalo. The freshman helped earn a doubles win and then took her No. 3 singles match 6-1, 6-3.
- Boston U. took on No. 23 Yale and Miami (Oh.) this weekend. The Terriers took the No. 4 and 6 singles matches versus Miami.
- Hartford had its match this weekend postponed and will next play against Albany.
- UMBC split its matches versus Drexel (W) and George Washington (L) this weekend. Freshman Madlena Kurasz went 4-0 in singles and doubles action.
