INDIANAPOLIS -- Thirty-one programs from America East member institutions received Public Recognition Awards for their Academic Progress Rates from the NCAA, the organization announced this morning. The number of teams earning recognition is the second most for America East since the program started and most since the 2004-05 academic year.
The NCAA Public Recognition Awards are given each year to teams with APRs in the top 10 percent in each sport.
Boston University led all America East schools with 11 squads recognized. University of Hartford had six squads honored, while University of New Hampshire received four awards, Stony Brook University and University of Vermont had three each, University of Maine had two and University at Albany and UMBC each had one.
Of the 31 teams honored, three were America East champions. Vermont captured its fifth men's basketball title since 2003 and went on to win an NCAA First Four contest. Boston U.'s softball team won its third league crown in four years and also picked up an NCAA regional win. The Terriers' swimming & diving program also hoisted a championship trophy. In total 24 America East regular-season or tournament champions have been honored since 2006-07.
The 954 teams publicly recognized this year for high achievement represent 560 women’s teams and 394 men’s or mixed squads.
Top performing APRs this year ranged from 978 to a perfect 1,000, with the majority of teams earning a perfect APR. The number of teams in some sports may exceed 10 percent depending on the number of perfect scores.
“These teams prove that it is possible to not only balance academic and athletic commitment, as most student-athletes do; but to exceed standards and post outstanding academic scores,” said NCAA President Mark Emmert. “The drive and determination shown in the classroom and on the field by these men and women represent what it means to be an NCAA student-athlete.”
Full APR scores for all teams, including penalties for low-performing teams, and conference rankings will be released June 20.
