Bearcats and Seawolves Drop NCAA Matches - AmericaEast.com The Binghamton men’s tennis team and Stony Brook women’s tennis team saw their seasons come to a close over the weekend dropping first round matches in the NCAA Tournament. The Bearcats and Seawolves, crowned America East champions two weeks ago at the USTA National Tennis Center, both lost 4-0 to their first round opponents. Binghamton fell to No. 13 Ole Miss in Oxford, Miss., by the final of 4-0 while the Stony Brook fell to No. 4 Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif., by the same 4-0 score. Fresh off its first-ever conference championship, Stony Brook squared off with the 2011 national runner-up and 2010 champion Cardinal on Friday. Stanford took to the doubles point when it won at No. 2, 8-0 as the Seawolves forfeited at the No. 3 position. America East Player of the Year Nini Lagvilava and Rookie of the Year Polina Movchan trailed just 5-2 at No. 1 doubles when the No. 2 match was decided. In singles action, the Seawolves faced three nationally ranked opponents and could not overcome a forfeit in the sixth slot. Movchan dropped her first set at No. 2 singles 6-2 but battled to an even 3-3 score in the second when her match was abandoned. The freshman finished the season with an 18-3 record at No. 2 singles. On Saturday, Binghamton, making its eighth NCAA Tournament appearance in the last 10 years, stood toe-to-toe with an Ole Miss team featuring four ranked singles players and two ranked doubles tandems. The Bearcats received a strong effort at No. 1 doubles from the team of Bastian Bornkessel and Ruben Devos who trailed 8-7 when the Rebels clinched the doubles point. Devos also posted the best singles match for the five-time defending America East champions. Devos took the first set from the 20th-ranked singles player in the country before dropping the final two sets. Robin Lesage and Ruben Haggai, both second-team all-conference performers, dropped their first sets at Nos. 4 and 5 but both trailed just 3-2 in the second when the Rebels clinched the match.
